Not really dumb. They played it safe and got burned.

When the WNT ratified the CBA, women's soccer was not pulling in the viewers and merchandise sales that men's soccer was. When they ratified the CBA, it was a good deal for them.

The WNT opted for security over risk and found that they can't make as much as they might have if they'd been willing to face some risk - capitalism vs. socialism in a nutshell.

The flip side of that is if they'd bombed spectacularly on the international stage and disappeared into obscurity, they'd still have been paid under their CBA. The men would have taken a severe pay cut under their CBA.
