As the world’s largest dam, a failure at the Three Gorges Dam would be a catastrophe on a level that is difficult to imagine, affecting perhaps 400 million people living in mega-cities down river like Wuhan, Nanjing, and Shanghai.

Torrential rainfall over the past several days has brought disastrous flooding to 26 provinces in China, endangering more than 10 million people. Thus far, 13 rivers in Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, and other areas have seen extensive flooding, and with more rain predicted, severe flood warnings have been issued for these rivers, including the Yangtze well into Monday (June 29).

For all I know, shanghaiist.com and vietreader.com are CIA propaganda ops… Or they're Taiwanese, or Japanese or Korean. China doesn't enjoy an hospitable neighborhood.

But the Three Gorges Dam is one of the most consequential projects in human history. It's young, having been completed in 2015. The scale of its engineering beggars belief:

"As of June 2008, China relocated 1.24 million residents as 13 cities, 140 towns and 1350 villages either flooded or were partially flooded by the reservoir, about 1.5% of the province's 60.3 million and Chongqing Municipality's 31.44 million population." (Wikipedia)

In 2010, NASA scientists calculated that the shift of water mass stored by the dams would increase the length of the Earth's day by 0.06 microseconds and make the Earth slightly more round in the middle and flat on the poles. (Wikipedia)

It's safe to say Chinese pride is on the line.

If the dam fails, which it will not, it's the biggest story of 2020.

But if the (mere) flooding is sufficiently disastrous, we might imagine political consequences for the government of the nation.

We're sitting over here this summer in slack-jawed amazement at the dynamism and hazards in our American character.

But history wiggles for everyone, and the Chinese might find some new ways of doing things as well.

Back in March, the Food and Drug Administration took the unprecedented step of allowing COVID antibody tests to flood the market without review. The tests were billed as a critical tool to assess where the virus had spread and who might have immunity. But in the government's rush to get more people tested quickly, it may have missed the mark. Over the course of a three-month investigation, 60 Minutes has learned that federal officials knew many of the antibody tests were seriously flawed but continued to allow them to be sold anyway.

The problem with failures like that is that everything seems fine. Until it isn't. If you can prevent a failure cascade, you might avoid catastrophe. Most loss of aircraft wrecks are the result of a failure cascade.

A super-close legalistic reading could show that Reddit doesn't allow "threats of violence" at all, even if the victim is white, although that's hardly what the common take-away is going to be. But the rule DOES explicitly condone directing "hate" at certain (ill-defined) groups of people.

Their purge left the hateful r/politics sub intact, so yeah, the bias is obvious.

Fucking white people, amirite? Thank god there is designated group I can hate on.

His Democratic Queens colleague, Bob Holden, said the bill would fuel the exodus of Gotham taxpayers sparked by the coronavirus pandemic and Mayor Bill de Blasio’s indifference to the concerns of the middle class.

“The middle class in this city continues to be treated as a cash cow. It’s no wonder people are fleeing the city,” Holden said.

Fellow Queens Democrat Peter Koo fumed, “We are tired of people peeing on the streets. The property owners pay a lot of money for services but there’s no services.

“I think property owners have to stand together and tell this administration enough is enough. They have to do something for us,” Koo said.
