The spreadsheet that shook the theater world: Marie Cisco’s ‘Not Speaking Out’ list
By Jessica Gelt Staff Writer June 9, 2020
Marie Cisco was fed up. America was in turmoil, rocked to its core by the brutal killing of George Floyd at the knee of a police officer in Minneapolis. Protests against systemic racism and injustice had been raging for five days, and the nation’s theaters were excruciatingly silent in expressing support.
"Fed up"? "The nation's theaters"?
FFS— Has anyone ever before turned to the owner of a theater — more specifically, of a cinema — for an "expression" of insight about "racism and injustice" or any such topic of moral righteousness? I don't remember them being consulted about Viet Nam. Or matters of women's liberation, gay marriage, the Iran hostage crisis, Watergate, bicycle helmets or anything but the price of Goobers and Raisinettes.
It's so goofy. I keep assuming that eventually someone will just look up at one of these clucking hens and say "Get Fucked," and then the hen will turn to the rest of the barnyard animals and be surprised when they don't share her self-righteousness.
Well, the Los Angeles Times is a shrinking enterprise with a shrinking slice of the popular mind, much like the Hollywood producer cliques under discussion in this piece.
But I remember how odd it seemed two months ago when a parking lot at LAX that I've often used started sending somber emails about Coronavirus, how they were doing everything they could and needed me to stay strong in this difficult hour which were were all sharing with heartfelt & naked intimacy. But not just the parking lot, also all the banks and credit cards and airlines and vendors and restaurants and all the completely impersonal enterprises which had made the 21st century so pleasant (theretofore)… Suddenly they needed customers to think we were all really tightly connected.
One great thing about being older, in an hour like this, is that you're somewhat invisible. No one's likely to pester me for expressions of "support," because no one cares what I think anyway. Perfect! I'd pretty much resolved to stop voting, because it gives politicians the illusion of my consent.
But it's not impossible that one of these mewling infants will select me as a target just because I'm an extremely attractive older white guy. "Well? WHERE'S *YOUR* EXPRESSION OF SUPPORT??!??"
I fear that on that day I'll misbehave.

Okay, actually the woman's going after actual theatrical venues… And when you actually look at the places on her spreadsheet, it feels even worse. She is apparently demanding an affirmation from Seattle Children's Theater. I was wrong about assuming she meant cinemas, so I won't feel bad about presuming that the Seattle Children's Theater is exactly what it sounds like.
The Firehouse Theatre in Farmers Branch, Texas.
Northern Sky Theater in Fish Creek, Wisconsin. The Lake Dillon Theatre Company in Silverthorne, Colorado. The Great River Shakespeare Festival in Winona, Minnesota.
You can find these enterprises described on the internet. A lot of them are obviously just hobbyist things run by two or three middle-aged friends who were in a play together in college or something. AND NOW SOMEONE IS TRACKING THEM WITH A SPREADSHEET ON THE INTERNET TO BE CERTAIN THEY'VE SAID THE CORRECT THINGS ABOUT GEORGE FLOYD.

Here's another cute pissing match! Justin Wolfers, a professor of economics and social media smugster at the University of Michigan, is blowing snot at Harald Uhlig, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago… Which, IIUC, is a premier institute for econ scholarship in the United States:
I don’t think it’s just or fair that Uhlig, as an editor at the @JPolEcon, is an important gatekeeper for economists trying to make their mark.
I don’t think the profession’s resolve to look more deeply into racial justice will get a fair hearing under his editorship.
I'm not calling Uhlig racist. But this pattern or ill-considered writing is systematic enough that it has led me to question his judgment.
As such, I call on @haralduhlig to resign his editorship at the @JPolEcon.
And I invite other senior economists to join me in doing so.
Accidentally posted this to yesterday's link thread.
This is what happened to the last batch of Americans who thought a collectivist system would be better than a capitalist one.
Those American emigrants who entered the "workers' paradise" were certain that they were leaving the misery of unemployment and poverty behind them.
Thousands were killed in this quiet country backwater, surrounded by trees to muffle their screams.
Stalin's executioners had been convinced of the need to "kill and kill and kill" for the benefit of all mankind.

This should warm the Angelenos hearts:
LA Council Pres. Nury Martinez, who introduced a motion to cut #LAPD’s budget by $150 million, had a private LAPD protection detail camped at her home from April to June. It was called off the night we called to ask her team about it.
The monster is coming for us all:
