• Gorgeous population density map. The replies are as good as Twitter gets… There's a sense that everyone sees a distinctly interesting feature. (Do you suppose the sun ever sets at that angle?)
Huh? So, an intense peaceful demonstration resulted in wounded police officers, a burning courthouse, and damaged property? I guess Oakland residents can be glad that it didn't become a violent demonstration.

"It's the stupidest kind of chauvinism, but I want to see these airplanes flying until I am gone."
*Sigh* That takes me back. The first airplane I ever flew on was a 727. The second was a 747, later that day. I was 13 years old.
Ten years later, I found myself on the contract 747 flying GIs from CONUS to Okinawa. All coach seats from nose to tail, operated by Flying Tigers. Within a couple years, Federal Express had the contract. Same 747, same aircrew, repainted tail.

I was going to say my first plane was a 707 from Tuscon to Chicago, but that's not right. That is the first I remember clearly, as I was 7 almost 8. Red eye, I remember watching the sun rise at O'Hare.
I think the first plane I was on as a wee lad was a DC-3. I was told that I turned green and needed the bag.

I love Coney's attention to language.
I'm back in the college town where I grew up. In an article yesterday, the city paper (a pretty meager broadsheet at this point) had an article about one of the major figures in the school's history. It affirmed that he believed in eugenics, "a flawed pseudoscience."
Consider from the clumsiness of that phrasing…
It disregards both the true horror and humane attractions of eugenic thought.
It countermands it's own intent; as if a "tidy pseudoscience" might have been forgivable.
And it conveys an incredible amount of fear.

All I know is that to me
You look like you're having fun
Open up your lovin' arms
Watch out here I come
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
"The best data from contemporary social science...suggest that the very persistence of the pervasive misogyny narrative is itself a manifestation of the opposite: society is largely biased in *favor* of women"
Completed in 2006, Three Gorge Dam began receiving floodwater on July 2 at 53,000 cubic meters per second, raising the water level to 149 meters. The maximum level is 175 meters.
A missing Forney mother found deceased in Farmers Branch on Thursday most likely died of an overdose and her two children subsequently perished due to a heat stroke after being left in their car seats in the back of their vehicle for more than a day according to law enforcement officials and the family.
Here's the statement from her sister ...
She fiercely loved her girls and was an inspirational mother. I always used to tell her I’m glad she did it (motherhood) first so I can steal parenting tips from her.
I hope this parenting tip isn't one she steals.
Don't any of these cases ever end with a family member saying "We hoped it would never happen, but we all saw this one coming. Natalie was a Godawful mother who had no business reproducing or being around kids."?

France has begun assembling their fusion reactor experiment. Target date: 2025.
Because right now it's in a million pieces and the instructions are in French, that's why.

I like crossing the Atlantic in the smaller planes. The ones that only one aisle. It doesn't happen often. But someone in your group is guaranteed a window!!!
It's the stupidest kind of chauvinism, but I want to see these airplanes flying until I am gone.
I've written here about my favorite example.
