With no end to the pandemic in sight, some public figures are arguing that nearly all restrictions and required precautions should be lifted so enough people become sick to achieve herd immunity.
But epidemiologists and other public health experts say that’s a really lousy idea.
“It’ll kill millions of people,” said Dr. Robert Murphy, executive director of the Institute for Global Health at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “Millions of people will die.”

And there is the problem with lying about things. COVID is highly contagious. You can slow it's spread but you cannot stop it. The disease is just too contagious for that to work. So eventually everyone will either have had it or know someone who had it. And then they will know you lied about it and no longer trust you.
It is no different than Reefer Madness. The dream was that lying would save people from pot and other drugs. Instead you have a generation that views all government statements about illegal drugs with suspicion.
Today the medical community is going through it's Reefer Madness moment. You can't go to church, or a bar, but committing arson in a large group is recommended?

We have had a vaccine for influenza for over 80 years. It is good to know that the disease which is far less infectious and less deadly than COVID has been eliminated forever.
It is also good to know that Crid has surrendered his license to the state of California. Many people die while driving. Many end up horribly injured for life. These are risks Crid thinks are not acceptable. After all, I wouldn't want to accuse Crid of being glib.
If you want to have a serious discussion without all the snark and hysteria Crid then I am all for it. But you will need to be honest and you will need to be rational. Conditions I don't think you can accept.

Letting it burn through would have helped solve our Medicare and social security problems pretty neatly. I know crid loves his life, but the 80 and 90 yos I saw when I was back in the field for a bit back in late March, were more than ready to go and pissed as hell at being imprisoned in their rooms for "their own good", as if once they reach a certain age they can't make their own decisions about risk.

You aren't even speaking metaphorically.
Here's the thing— Popular chatter about China's growing wealth and prestige implies that it's already a 2010-ish United States in terms of its economic performance and market coherence. It ain't.
Look a the 'foundations' of the riverbank skyscrapers in the clip above, and look at the many responses to yesterday's tweet about fragility of the Three Gorges Dam (click "View More Replies," not "More Tweets"): Viewed whole, this is not a nation of reliable engineering or trustworthy performance and regulation.
The roots of the nation’s current inability to control the pandemic can be traced to mid-April, when the White House embraced overly rosy projections to proclaim victory and move on.

As I don't live in New York I don't really keep up on their budget priorities and such. But a quick search shows Cuomo has been very concerned about increasing medicaid costs. He has worked hard to get the growth down for years. Medicare is funded differently but there is still state of New York funding for the elderly. I couldn't tell how much is spent that way.
Either way good reasons to not elect the man. Either as VP or stealth president.

I suspect that Trump's "leadership" right now (sorry if someone already said this in the very long NYT article; I can't read it till later) is his subtle way of saying "don't vote for me" while still holding on to his more virulent mask-hating supporters. After all, he'll need them to watch any new TV show he might have if he's voted out.
And if I'm right about that, AND he loses, he won't want to run again in 2024, so he'll just say his doctor didn't recommend it. Something like that. Not to mention that he'd be 77 by the time he started running, so I'd be surprised if his doctor DIDN'T try to discourage him from running.

Dear woman, I'd be amazed if he'd ever paid attention to any such directive from any medical professional in all his years. As a life choice, he's avoided becoming an alcoholic like his big brother; and I'd bet that in his somewhat circumscribed moral calculus, he's done as much for his health as he should be expected to do… He probably figures speedy cold meds and junk food are his own beeswax.
Even Clinton didn't get serious about his health until the first cardiac event.
