Kendi's question, answered sincerely, flatters his argument not at all. Can you imagine how many top-tier technical enterprises are desperate to hire a black person with strong mathematical aptitude?
Crid at August 22, 2020 6:43 AM
I do think having more black and women engineers would benefit society overall, but I fail to see how it would benefit engineering.
Conan the Grammarian at August 22, 2020 6:59 AM
And yet, you may BECOME more deeply concerned about the race and sex of the engineers who designed a bridge if anti-racism concerns become the top priority for college engineering programs. That's because, regardless of the underlying reasons, the fact is that right now and for the foreseeable future there are not enough minority high school graduates who are prepared to successfully graduate with engineering degrees to satisfy an equity-based goal. "Equity" would only be achieved if over 30% of graduates were BIPOC. At least 50% of the entire class should also be women. Even then, because of historic under-representation, today's Diversion, Equity, and Inclusion mandates would not be satisfied because of the perceived need to catch-up. It's safe to say that a DEI advocate would only declare themselves "satisfied" if 100% percent of the class fell into the preferred categories.
RigelDog at August 22, 2020 8:17 AM
The anti-racist engineering course is probably a required course at Boston University, where Kendi is on faculty. Similar courses have been requirements at Purdue and most other "woke" universities for years. Unfortunately this nonsense may also be taking hold at Rennselear. Students are forced to take these useless time wasting courses and must learn how to parrot back the woke PC BLM propaganda, or face having their careers ended even before they have a chance to start.
There are a lot of highly evolved constantly updated versions of the Postmodernist Generator circulating amoung engineering students who submit the programs output for these woke courses essay requirements, and generally get excellent grades. This shows the current worthlessness of Big University liberal arts classes and their instructors, when the pseudorandom output of a computer program is considered good well thought out writing. The absurdity of these woke classes designed to reeducate and humiliate white engineers is that most engineering students are Asians, an embarrassing fact the University diversity departments work around by accusing them of being the coat tail riding sell out running dogs of the white patriarchy. None of this is predestined to boost donations from STEM grads after they matriculate.
By the way, most STEM grads are better writers than their liberal arts counterparts. The former have learned to think clearly and how to express their ideas concisely, while the latter are trained in Derrida-ian word salad content free babble speak.

University Athletic Departments are dire needful of courses for anti rascist because they mostly are black and we Asians are underrepresented. This a bad situation which must be ended as it is damaging to Asian self esteem. There are too many Asians being forced into science and engineering because they are being denied opportunities in professional sports. This terrible discrimination keeping Asians out of high profile high paying sports jobs must be ended. I am look forward to day when Mr Kenti brings his formidable intellect and impeccable spelling and syntax to focus on this problem of Asian under representation in sport.
Zaou Quan Li at August 22, 2020 9:24 AM
The only real anti-racism is absolute color blindness.
But in the short term it appears more likely that women and/or minorities with math deficiencies are going to be licensed as engineers under affirmative action rules. In which case you will need to care. That bridge in Florida which collapsed was no fluke.

I look forward to the day when people recognize that [A] intelligence is as heritable as any characteristic you can name, including height or skin color, and [B] there is demonstrable variation in G (the general factor of intelligence) between populations, i.e. races, and that Asians score higher than anyone with the exception of Ashkenazi, who are almost now intermarrying with normies almost furiously.

From the Amazon summation of the book referenced in the tweet to which Crid links:
Collision of Wills. He argues that human conflict is more likely to occur in symmetrical relationships—among friends or social equals—than in hierarchical ones, wherein the difference of social rank between the two individuals is already established.

Lenona and I were talking about Reddit last week. I think most of these tawdry little narratives aren't real at all… They're just little fragments of melodrama to encourage web site "engagement."
It's fine to play the game, but don't let it break your heart or anything.Crid at August 22, 2020 8:53 PM
There are over 300 million people in the US alone. What are the chances one of them is doing something stupid? Being a jerk? So they very well may be real. And they easily could be fake as people think up a story and post it looking for attention. After all I don't think there is a verification system.
Real or not they are still not significant. Which is a hallmark of things Lenona is concerned about.
Purity balls are quite real. But unless you live in certain small towns in Colorado you will never come across one of them. The Amish are quite real. But it is pretty unlikely any of us will have to deal with their unruly kids. Lenona is quite correct that there are no abortion doctors in west Texas. There are also very few grocery stores. After all there are almost no people in west Texas.
So like Crid says play the game if you think it is fun or interesting. Just don't get confused and think that it really matters.
