Pleasant Podcast Experiences for your Weekend Enjoyment!
• Kaus & Mead. Kaus gives a brisk but pretty thorough survey of what we need out of our economy and the ways it might go, and Mead makes an interesting point: At our strongest and most rewarding period for the middle class, having everyone working productively didn't merely create lots of wealth. Having all those people in the workplace (and all those homes revolving around jobs) brought acuity to workers. They understood that policy was about making choices, because that's one of the things you learn in a good economic circumstance. When people are on the dole, or (dear God) when they're given money by UBI, their only way of improving their lives is to press government to borrow more to provide 'free' stuff.
I thought that was handsomely subtle. I'd always resisted UBI because it was undignified and essentially paid voters to let politicians go nuts… But it also diminishes the attunement of the guy on the street in practical ways.
• On this Fifth podcast, Moynihan makes a brilliant point: Donald Trump has turned the United States into not just a stupider nation, but a specifically Latin American kind of stupid (and submissive) polity. He says bullshit, and cheats. But his voters are too ugg to want to bother with that whole 'truth' thing anyway, so they don't care what he says. They know he'll do what he wants without regard to their needs, and tomorrow will be another day.
That too is a fantastic insight. He's turned us, by the public mood, into a South American country.

• A tweet about cars: The '59 looks more modern... But then, I would say that, wouldn't I???
• A tweet about politics.

I've seen Biden/DNC online and radio ads go from:
covid is getting worse!
Trump is dismantling the USPS to steal the election!
Joe will bring manufacturing jobs back!
Vote like your life depends on it!
I particularly like Biden is going to bring manufacturing jobs back. To paraphrase his former boss: like, with a magic wand?

But the interns have already won. Rogan's podcasts where he interviewed """evil""" people like Alex Jones and Chris D'Elia have been scrubbed from Spotify. This is just them pushing their luck.

Call me cynical, but I'm expecting this horse to be euthanized after the November elections.

Suddenly my bedroom poster of the pastel-uniformed Politically Correctobots from 1993 seems SO SILLY....

These idiots don't value the education, science, and knowledge their political mouthpieces claim they value. This is not the action of a party of science; one that values facts. This is the party of thuggery.
