• Delicious afternoon snack.
• Much is explained, weirdly.

I think they're trying too hard to mimic real meat:

Incidentally, for those who care about such things, Lewis Hamilton is a grinding, churning, punishing machine of a race car driver.
I think he's going to be like Jordan, at least as Jordon is regarded today: Despite rule changes, his records and achievement compare favorably with contemporary heroic performers; at least one generation of superstars to follow will seem merely derivative; and for his cohort of fans, his dominance, the fear he put into the hearts of competitors and teammates, and his unending improvements to his own gamesmanship will define the excellence of the contest.
Tiger deserve that same status— But there was this thing....

Or not hard enough.
Ba-dumph! Thanks. I'll be here all week. Be sure to tip your waiters and waitresses. Take my wife, please.

If true that Buzzfeed article on the WSJ is worse than presented. It looks like they still don't know why they are failing.
Ben at October 24, 2020 8:47 AM
• Sorry: Orrery.
• Also, this WSJ timeline mentioned in the earlier link is repulsive unless you can disregard the bitterness to accept its truth: Your moral worth has nothing to do with your ability to make absurd amounts of money in real estate.
(That's what happened to me, though not on such a grand scale.)

• Burge is a fucking natural resource deserving of our best sustenance and preservation.
• I chased him away last year, but I wish that kid who hated Musk so bitterly was still around:

• Suuuuh-weeeet sixteen!!
• This is almost unbelievably cool. I remember Paglia saying something about that a few years ago, paraphrase: America is so young she has no sense of her own history, but Europe is so old that she stumbles over the lessons of the dead wherever she goes.
Yes, I should probably stop bothering you with Massimo tweets, as they're almost all good and well-linked.

For me, the main problem is I can't read anything the WSJ publishes without a subscription and they don't offer an online-only subscription. So, I have to pay hundreds of dollars for the broadsheet, throw it away, and log into the online site. No thanks.
It's a good paper, much better than Buzzfeed thinks it is. The issues with race coverage and "editorial accuracy" are mostly issues with "wokeness."
PS - it's good to see someone effectively making fun of lefties - What to do about coyotes.

“For me, the main problem is I can't read anything the WSJ publishes without a subscription and they don't offer an online-only subscription. “
They certainly do offer a digital only subscription. I have always been able to negotiate an extension of their special offers, When that fails, I cancel for a few months and then take another intro offer.
I am glad they aren’t woke. Who needs them to be a copy of the NYT?
Isab at October 24, 2020 3:22 PM
Glad to hear that. I've never been able to find on in the subscription options I've been sent.

Go to their web site. Offers pop up all the time.

You want the all access digital option Conan. ~$20/mo for an annual subscription. Though you can get a better deal if you are willing to haggle.
As for the quality of the paper, there are very obvious issues (especially in the digital version) that largely cropped up as Murdoch tried to hand power over to his kids. The infighting between the news and editorial departments the buzzfeed article covers are quite real and quite obvious. But they are not the issue causing the paper's decline. When Murdoch's kids took over things started drifting more woke and left. This resulted in people in the comments section correcting the journalists and adding wider perspective. Instead of improving the quality of their reporting the paper decided to censor customers and call them racists. At this point over half of the articles don't allow commenting.
I actually canceled my subscription earlier this year. With retiring I been looking to cut spending. And I noticed I don't really read the articles anymore. The headlines cover around 90% of the information. With the comments censored so heavily I can't get good information from there anymore. So why pay for a subscription? I can read all the headlines for free and that is 90% of the value of the paper today.
So I don't doubt what was reported by buzzfeed. The infighting they cover is old news. What is more concerning is the lack of recognition that declaring war on your customers is a bad business decision.
Ben at October 26, 2020 7:28 AM
Cool. I haven't read it in a while, so my opinion of the paper is colored by the past and probably out of date. I started getting all my market news online and doing my own research a few years back.
The editorials were always interesting but, again, this view dates back to when they ran interesting editorials.
I'll pick up a newsstand copy and see if they're worth the $20 / month. Probably not, even if it's not a rag by now. Like you, I'm cutting expenses; not retiring yet, but being unemployed due to COVID has deeply cut my disposable income and willingness to spend on extras.
My last job was with a company that worked with airlines and that industry is all but dead, so the contractors got laid off in March. I've reached an age where the career advisors say I'm not going to be at the head of the line to be rehired or hired.
Conan the Grammarian at October 26, 2020 10:14 AM
The editorials not written by the editorial board are still good. There are quality people from all sides who get published on the opinion page. And of course there are blatant hacks who get published too. I can see the value in letting the head of the NEA be heard even if everything he writes is a transparent lie.
The paper as a whole is not quite a rag. But it is headed in that general direction. From a business standpoint the real issue is the current owners and managers don't want the customers they already have. They want to be the New York Times. That would have status (or so it appears). So they have worked hard to get rid of all these unwanted customers and failed to replace them with newer better customers.
I retired because the wife was going crazy looking after the kids and she was dragging all of us down with her. Looks like she just isn't a kid person. And that is fine. Thankfully we could afford to close down my business and let me Mr. Mom it for the next few years. Even if I hadn't shut things down I probably wouldn't be able to find much work. Oil is more or less dead right now. Companies are trying to keep their best 10%-20% and have let everyone else go. When things turn around oil supply will not be able to keep up with demand. I would not be shocked to see gas prices jump up by $3-$4/ga.
