Yep, I've done that one. Or it never escapes the out-box, or I was writing it, got distracted, and it lingered on as a draft. Or...Or...

Los Angeles:
CBS News is reporting that barrels full of DDT-laced toxic waste have been found off the California coast between Catalina and Long Beach.
There could be as many as a half-million of them, some dating back to the 1940s. A submersible was used to discover the surprise gift from the past at a depth of 3,000 feet.
Just thought you'd all like to know.

Yikes. Turns out it's not a surprise after all. Just a surprise to me.
Thanks, chemical industry, always living up to your rep.

When I was in college, back in the day, in the times before electricity, the Santa Monica Bay was described as "a marine disaster of unprecedented proportions"… Not just because of the DDT, which was off-the-scale horrific, but also because every Cold War manufacturer in SoCal dumped their heavy metal toxics into that puddle for thirty or forty years. A lot of people got real rich while poisoning that water.
I learned to scuba dive on the northern rim, a few miles from a munitions "retirement" dump that no one talks about, not even the boat captains.
Also, I'm sure that thing under my left arm is just a lump.
