Biden Comes To His Senses On Student Loans
My parents weren't up for paying for grad school, and as I've revealed before, I was unsure whether I'd ever be able to earn enough to pay back student loans, so I didn't go.
I likewise went to undergrad at University of Michigan in-state because it was cheaper than out-of-state Ivy and other fancy-groovy schools.
Instead of going to grad school, I worked hard to develop myself as a writer and built a business -- which cost me in time and money for years.
It just doesn't seem fair for taxpayers who didn't benefit from those pricey college educations to have to pay for them.
About Biden's shifted position on student loans, Bevan Hurley and Nikki Schwab writes in The Daily Mail:
Joe Biden will not include student loan forgiveness in his upcoming budget, after pledging to cancel $10,000 from loans on the campaign trail.Biden, who was seen arriving back at the White House on Sunday from a weekend at Camp David, is due to announce his latest budget at the end of next week, and claims he has grown suspicious of wiping out the loans.
The shift in policy is a major blow for the more than 42 million Americans who have student loans.
Biden had been pressured by progressives in the Democrat Party including Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to forgive up to $50,000 in debt. Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, was also in favor.
In an interview with the New York Times Friday, Biden said he had grown 'suspicious' of canceling the debt.
'The idea that you go to Penn and you're paying a total of 70,000 bucks a year and the public should pay for that? I don't agree,' Biden told the Times.
The White House has previously said Biden wanted to see Congress pass legislation to wipe away student debt, rather than through executive order.
The announcement marks a shift from the White House's previous position last month when Biden's chief of staff Ronald Klain said the president was considering canceling up to $50,000 in debt.
...[Elizabeth] Warren had previously called on Biden to wipe away the debt using executive order.
'Biden-Harris can cancel billions of dollars in student loan debt, giving tens of millions of Americans an immediate financial boost and helping to close the racial wealth gap,' Warren Tweeted in November, days after the election was called in Biden's favor.
Oh, hurl. So sick of everything being made about race.
The president argued that it would be hard to tell a community he was going to write-off debt from Harvard or Yale instead of investing in childhood education.AOC complained, saying: 'Entire generations of working class kids were encouraged to go into more debt under the guise of elitism. This is wrong.'
According to Government statistics released in January, 42.3 million people, or one in six adults, in America have a student debt.
The average outstanding loan amount is $36,520.

I’m glad that Biden made the shift. I think it is much more reasonable to pay for pre-school and dual credit classes in high school or inexpensive junior college rather than the exorbitant fees for a university education.
If we could find a bare-bones way of getting the University Education without paying for sports arenas, student recreation, and other frills, I would be thrilled. With online classes available, there is no reason to invest so much in buildings, land, landscaping, and garages.
It won’t help me since, who is dealing with a lot of student debt even though we paid for his undergrad. Perhaps it will help his daughter.

"Free" preschool is throwing pebbles in a stream. By mid-elementary, the ripples have smoothed out and you cannot tell who went or didn't. That's the definition of wasted money. And a slap to those of us who paid for our kids.

Community colleges, on line, or just going to the library and reading are all cheaper and better.
"With online classes available, there is no reason to invest so much in buildings, land, landscaping, and garages. "
That's not where the $ goes, it goes into admin salaries of departments that didn't exist a few years ago. Department of X studies, Dean of discrimination, Dean of inclusion, Department of X ethnic students. Each commanding a 6 figure salary and a staff of 20 and budget in the millions. Get rid of dean of science since science is racist and replace with dean of protesting.
Add to that a 6 figure salary for your favorite Dem senators to speak/teach there.

Did no one notice the terrifying part of this situation?
"The White House has previously said Biden wanted to see Congress pass legislation to wipe away student debt, rather than through executive order.

EXECUTIVE ORDER???? Just casually tossed off there in policy discussions and media coverage. Since when can the President just make an executive order of such magnitude, to spend money like this?

You realize that that can be read two ways? I'll bet the vast majority of those who spent their student loans to major in gender studies, or race theory, didn't benefit from them either.
In fact I'll bet that the vast majority of those who want the loans forgiven are in that category.

And the professors aren't exactly thrilled about all the new Dean of Micromanaging positions either.

Part of the reason for in person learning is to meet new people, specifically in your major. This is how one joins the "old boy" network on the ground floor. It may provide opportunities at a later date.
One does not get that level of camaraderie thru zoom.

Student loan forgiveness is unfair, and inciting racial division is dangerous. But people still vote for Democrats.
I could go for a mean tweet and more sensible policies over what we have now.

Sanity. Thank goodness.
Maybe part of the reset after the pandemic will be more skepticism about going into enormous debt for college, which always has been optional but has been sold to the public as a near-universal good.

Pffft, the adultchildren are finally learning that politicians never keep their promises once the votes are cast.
Sixclaws at May 25, 2021 2:13 PM
I find it interesting that Biden campaigned with a pledge of wiping out $10,000 of each loan. It's an amount that would be easy to walk back. I know a lot of people grumbled that $10,000 wouldn't really help that much with their situations and that he might as well not bother.

Don’t get too excited about this change of opinion. The reality is that unemployment is higher than expected and so is inflation. The Democrats don’t have the numbers to override their purple members, yet. If they get filibuster proof majorities in 2022, they will push this and other nightmare spending bills through and it will be screw the taxpayer all day long. Elections matter.

A better solution would be to convince jobs to stop requiring a BA for hiring.
Everyone goes to college just means the new criteria will be a Masters degree.
NicoleK at May 25, 2021 10:46 PM
The easiest path to that, NicoleK, is to let employers test potential employees. The current trend of requiring a college degree for anything and everything is a direct response to the federal government making it de facto illegal to issue intelligence and most skill tests to potential employees.
Ben at May 26, 2021 5:30 AM
There are so many people taking on more debt than necessary and never paying it off because they expect the government to pay it off for them.
Ever notice the democrats have been campaigning on the same promises for decades? They never actually deliver because they'd rather have it as a campaign issue next time.
And people still vote for them.
Trust at May 26, 2021 6:04 AM
That's politics in general. It's better to have a campaign issue than a solution.
If you put your trust the Republican Party, you are still putting your trust in politicians, a stupid thing to do, in general, no matter the party.

_____
I never said anything about trusting republicans. But at least with republicans, news media and big tech have an interest in holding them accountable. With democrats they ignore and downright cover for them, to say nothing of all the newspapers and CNN shows that are little more than democratic campaign material disguised as journalism.

"Progressive" = bullshit artist with no ideas other than to use someone else's money.
"Elections matter"? What makes you think you voted? If you can't tell me how your vote was counted...
...you didn't vote. You can't prove you did.
