I just love this. (PS Clara Peller/Wendy's reference, in case you were unborn or 5 at the time.)

It would be great to see the paywalled piece, but even this much of it makes a lot more sense than what we've been reading for the last two years.
China is a problem, an enormously hazardous nation... But first, those bastards are hazardous to themselves.
For all our problems, it's much, much better to be American.

Media and gov't is attempting to frame the gas shortage as panic buying and hoarding is garbage. The peak demand increased by 20%, less than normal weekday or seasonal changes. During Covid, demand is already less than normal. The lines are because many stations ran out and the few still with gas get much more customers.
It's simple: unlike toilet paper, an average person can't store a lot of gas. Tp can be bought in a years supply, but with gas, anything more than a extra fill ups worth ( about a week in general usage) requires storage that people don't have. attempts to store in non regular containers are still a minimal amount of gas. Though they are the same vids and pictures posted over and over. Sorry buying an extra 1 weeks amount is not hoarding.

You are right that this is a supply issue and not a demand issue, Joe. But as a guy in the oil industry this is also a preview of what is going to happen all over the US as the various restrictions come off. Oil was already into it's down cycle before covid and then the business restrictions dropped demand even further. At this point a lot of layoffs and consolidation have already happened. A number of wells have been turned off for too long to just turn them back on. All the tar and other gunk has settled and the wells will have to be cleaned before they can start producing again. That is going to cause similar supply disruptions as demand returns to normal levels.

Too many believe you just turn a switch and economy starts up again.
Add to that the latest wars in the middle east and that the entire world is restarting at same time.

Remember that time the gasoline supply was interrupted and people were filling garbage bags with gasoline and then driving around with them?
That was cool.

"Remember that time the gasoline supply was interrupted and people were filling garbage bags with gasoline and then driving around with them?"
Not the smartest, but if my life or family depended on available gas, and the supply likely vanishing.
However, it seems to be a few isolated, though extremely published, occurrences.
