Come to think of it the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, which probably came about as something to keep Melinda busy once the kiddies all went off to school, is just tax deductible potlach.

C'mon. Gates has a reasonable shot at ending malaria. Sometimes Gates-er Myhrvold also has a design to safely fulfill all our (planetary) needs for energy by using — and in the process, greatly diminishing — our existing nuclear waste.
Even if your cynicism is not inappropriate, billionaires having fun is getting things done for our culture which no other enterprise is inclined to attempt.
