California: Where The Criminals Stroll Out Of The Store With Their Loot
In California, Prop 47 made theft of less than $950 in goods a misdemeanor, so shoplifters often steal just under the limit.
This is ruinous to merchants, and eventually, they close their doors. People who count on being able to walk to local businesses like a drugstore are out of luck.
Here's an example of the sort of brazen shoplifting California merchants experience. (Scroll down for the video.)
Christina Laila writes at GP:
Los Angeles - Thieves were caught on video casually walking out of a TJ Maxx in Granada Hills on Monday in a brazen robbery. The shoplifters calmly walked out of the retail store with a giant bag and armfuls of stolen merchandize in broad daylight.
...Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva blasted Prop 47 and Marxist DAs who refuse to prosecute thefts.
"In the past, pre Prop-47 and pre these progressive DA's like George Gascón, they'd at least bother to run out, now they don't even bother to run out. They just causally stroll out with all the time in the world knowing that as long as they keep the tally under $950 it's perfectly OK," Villanueva said.
Thanks to the Marxist DAs and Prop 47, shoplifters can virtually 'legally' take $949 worth of merchandise from a store and at most get charged with a misdemeanor (if that).

Voters who have voted in these measures (and the pols who push them) under some "progressive" delusionalism are responsible for the ruin of this state.

Nominally 949, but it's not as if anyone is ringing things up, oh you stole 1100 we got ya. So banks, cars and jewelry stores are safe, but no where else.
So next step is chain stores close, some armed convenience stores open up (expect shootings and lawsuits) so they may not open for long and at home delivery (Amazon) and porch pirating to skyrocket.
Invest in a porch/delivery lock box.

Under common law, a misdemeanor just meant punishable up to a year in jail. They ought to be arresting these folks and tossing them in the clink for 364 days. No early release.
Otherwise ...
Stores with private armed security and checkpoints to get in and get out. There will be an airlock system (no strolling in or out), and people trying to leave without paying will be dealt with harshly. They'll figure out a way to do it that minimizes the legal risks, but it will cause prices to go up even more.
I predict porch pirates are going to need to find another line of work. Because a lot of them are going to start getting shot.

Theft, even up to the $950 limit is still a crime in California, a misdemeanor punishable with a fine of up to $1,000 and a sentence of up to a year in jail. It's the prosecutors who choose not to prosecute these misdemeanors who are letting thieves run rampant.
Small thefts in retail add up to huge losses. People who've never worked retail management often fail to understand how big the problem really is. In retail, it's called "shrink" and, according to the NRF, it cost US retailers over $46 billion in 2018.
Shoplifting recently moved to the top of rankings, outpacing employee theft as the major source of retail shrink in the US. Other major sources of shrink are return fraud, administrative errors, poor inventory management, and spoilage in food retail.
Small thefts (or savings) add up fast. In 1987, Northwest Airlines had flight attendants cut limes into 16 pieces, instead of the former 10 slices and saved half a million dollars. This, just on lime garnishes for drinks.
California's retail environment is going to change significantly as retailers find themselves alone in combating shoplifting. I wonder if Californians will remember who is really responsible when draconian anti-theft measures are implemented and a simple run to the store takes twice as long as it once did - or does in any other state.

I visited a large grocery in a rough part of chicago. even without the stupid CA law, they needed 2 full-time armed security guards (big guys). This costs a fortune.
The conceit that police cause crime is so backwards and dumb. Who could believe that a world without laws would be peaceful? Look at failed states (ie no government) like Somalia--peaceful? ha

Security guards at Ralphs on Olympic in West LA are young athletes dressed like ninjas, in dark, form-fitting combat attire with boots and fittings of aluminum and carbon fiber. With their twitching eyes and straight stature, they look like they just came from a video game convention and are still pretty amped.
Security guards at Kroger in the Midwest are guys in golf shirts with bellies hanging over their belts. They look like they're going to their brother-in-law's for a beer after work, and aren't too concerned that someone's going to make a dash for the detergent.

If you want to know what the stores become like under these conditions, here is an account:

If this business of ignoring theft goes on long enough, people will learn they have to protect themselves - and CA will become as violent as Somalia.
