Food chart apparently created on Backwards Day. The 3 actually healthy foods on it get demonized: Egg/butter, cheese, ground beef. PS I eat these foods daily (+other hi-fat/low-carb foods) so I weigh what I did in high school (or sometimes 3 lbs over if I get a snouty for a bit). https://t.co/zT6sXUrroi

My problem is I love cheese AND bread. Preferably together...
There are diets where you can have bread, but not cheese.
There are diets where you can have cheese, but not bread.
I want the diet where you can have both, dammit!

Canned peaches? Aren't those usually full of added sugar? The fuck? Even the whole grains eat lots of fruit crowd isn't into added sugar...
NicoleK at October 25, 2021 12:07 PM
Wait, how'd chocolate covered almonds make the cut?! Those are both high fat AND high carb so no matter which diet you're on....
NicoleK at October 25, 2021 12:08 PM
In my experience, if you're over a certain age, what matters most is how LITTLE you eat.
(Unless you're willing to spend most of your leisure time jogging.)

NicoleK, a significant contribution to these kinds of rankings is price per calorie.
Ground Beef -> 0.4c/cal
Grape Juice -> 0.3c/cal
In no way is grape juice healthier for you than ground beef. But it is cheaper.
And then there is popularity. Hence why eggs usually lose out.

Ah I see the peaches "donation" check got cashed.
Joe J at October 25, 2021 6:47 PM
Almonds are expensive though….

The person doing the study likes chocolate covered almonds. Nothing more than that. Otherwise why would you include a food with such low consumption next to staples like meat, cheese, juice, and cereal.
Actual health outcomes are not really involved in such recommendations.

You can go a long way by just getting most of the sugar out of your diet.
Haven’t had fruit juice in years. And don’t really eat much whole fruit either. Chips and cereal don’t make it into the house. Dairy I’m allergic to. (Lactose)
My weakness is potato pancakes, which I don’t make at home.
Bread is empty carbs, like rice, and should be eaten maybe twice a week, no more.
Lenona is correct here. Most of us older people need to eat about half or less of your typical restaurant meal. I hate to go out anymore unless it is to one of the conveyer belt sushi restaurants. There, both the pace of the meal, and the choice of the food in small portions, makes it easy to eat just what I need and no more. Everywhere else, I take a box home, and I stay completely away from buffets except for very special occasions. Too expensive, and too much food.

I have to wonder, though, why one seldom hears of fat people who eat more rice than anything else. Unless they eat four or five meals a day - or a lot of sweet dishes.
lenona at October 26, 2021 9:42 AM
I mean, if it was just regular almonds...

Most of the people I know who eat a high carb/ rice diet get lots and lots of exercise. This includes the Japanese. Some of the younger Japanese are getting quite heavy. Too much snacking I think along with a sedentary life style.
Calories do count. If you look at a Japanese Bento with the tiny portions of most of the side items, I doubt if any of them are over 350-400 calories in the entire meal, Three of those a day with no snacking and just tea will not make you fat.
Note for NikoleK. The bread and pastries are too good in Europe. I need to stay far far away or walk three of four miles a day touring the sights.

NicoleK, I've got nothing against almonds, chocolate covered or otherwise. But almonds are not a staple. The just aren't.
Just look at the next item up on the list. 'Nonfat chocolate frozen yogurt'. Seriously? People need to eat more ice cream? And only chocolate ice cream not vanilla?
The person making the list likes chocolate. That is all the thinking that went into the list.

You aren't talking to any Chinese people. Lots of people get fat off of rice.
Ben at October 26, 2021 2:03 PM
For your information, when I was in Hong Kong in 2001, there was hardly even one fat person in sight. It isn't exactly poverty-stricken.

Overweight and obesity in China
The once lean giant has a weight problem that is increasing rapidly
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1550451/
So what happened? How did China go from lean to fat? Well . . . communism isn't good for food production. People suffering from famine don't tend to be beefy. After turning partially capitalist now 1/5 of all obese people in the world are Chineese. And yes they got fat off of rice.
But never fear! President Xi is working hard to fix this. New famines are on the horizon for China. New wars too!
Ben at October 27, 2021 5:18 AM
I think it's not that they got fat off of rice, but off of rice plus many high-calorie sauces and separate items to make the meal taste good.
