Hillary In 2008
She's outhawking the hawks all the way to The White House, predicts Andrew Sullivan.

Old news.

Last week the founder and CEO (love the title) of the Democratic Leadership Council (new dems) cautioned the Chamber of Commerce meeting that Hillary was likely to be more in line with their views than is generally believed. Quite consistent with Sullivan's Dec. link.

Also said by the Newt: "Bill Clinton dragged the Democrats kicking and screaming back to the middle." Ya gotta love the Grinch.

Thanks for linking to that, Amy. Sullivan was in top form there.

Two questions, though:

1. He said that Bush "has such emotional support from the right that he can [...] enact the biggest new welfare state entitlement in a generation and still be enormously popular with the party base." Did I miss something? What entitlement is he referring to?

2. Did anyone ever respond to Sullivan's personal ad -- you know, the one where he offered to milk someone's member dry with his muscular little buttocks?

I missed the buttocks ad, Lena. But I only wanted to point out that if Hillary truly has designs on the White House in 2008, she better hope whoever the Democrats finally push forward in 2004 loses. Either that, or she would need to become a Republican.

"she better hope whoever the Democrats finally push forward in 2004 loses."

She's not going to have to hope too hard for that one. We've obviously got more Bush on the way.

Lena,

I think the "entitlement" reference was to the perscription drug bill. It'll make going to Mars look cheap.

A lot of things have changed in this election cycle. The perennial, biennial, NRA bashing by democrats has finally vanished - even if Michael Moore had to step down from Dean and endorse the General.

Thanks, Doug. Given his HIV diagnosis, I'd expect Sullivan to be a bit more sympathetic with elderly people and all the money they've got to drop on drugs.

Lena,

I've always been impressed with people, like Sullivan, who take positions at odds with their self interest. Their numbers are so low. Most people use their intellect to pursue their own desires, rather than refine them.

Doug --

Sullivan taking positions at odds with his self-interest? Does "PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG! CLICK HERE TO MAKE A DONATION" sound familiar? Do you usually stake out the high moral ground for other people for free, or do you request "donations" as well?

Lena,

Sullivan's begging for donations is both ubiquitous and transparent. His views are quite iconoclastic hence interesting. I don't particularly think he holds a high moral ground though. That is a different, and more global, thing than being able to, on occasion, value ideas opposite one's own self interest.
