Remember Joe Frank? He was the best thing that ever happened to KCRW. One of his weirder psychedelic monologues included a wave of toothless old men running over hill and dale: He called them "blowjob zombies"... Once. The weekend repeat of the show had lost that part of the narrative.
A similar deletion occurred in Frank's fantasy ramble about the talent stable at KCRW, wherein he claimed the second largest penis among the staff, the proudest unit being owned by the guy who hosted Chocolate City. And there was the time during pledge drive where his show had a sound bite from "Ruth Seymour" describing her sexual prowess, only the voice sounded like a suspiciously young, and recently arrived, Asian woman.
Seymour is whack. She's always run that station like the worst sort of high school fiefdom, doling out air time on her merest whim. Has anyone noticed that with the singular exception of Olney, KPFK does everything that KCRW does but BETTER, and without the mechanized disco in wee hours? (A few years ago one of the weeklies speculated [convincingly] that payola might be involved.) For a while Ruth had a show called "The Politics of Culture." This locution portends a bold new horizon in lefty navel gazing, and when you tuned in, that's what you got. Seymour is whack.
Loh was never my cup of tea, I preferred Frank's brown acid. Many friends adore her, buying the books and seeing the stage shows, etc. She's a genuine LA voice. But did she even lose a job? Was she PAID at KCRW? And given the chaotic nature of Seymour's will in so many aspects of programming, is there any reason to think a first amendment issue, or some other broadly oppressive force, is at work here?
