"Free Speech?...Yeah, Whatever."
Reason's Matt Welch slaps the blasÈ journalists who aren't all that worried about current and impending curbs on freedom of speech.
Matt says something provocative early in the piece:
"[Loh's firing] is either an example of the chilling effect that government regulation has on speech or an inflammatory excuse to get rid of an unwanted employee. Either way, damage was done to the climate for free expression on the airwaves."
The rest of the piece is given entirely to the first scenario. The notion that Seymour might be a whack, power-mad she-troll is not explored. And I think it oughta be.
First, because I think this would severely curtail the first amendment concerns this episode seemed to nourish. Secondly, the woman is, so far as can be determined from this side of the radio dial, a whack, power-mad she-troll. Thirdly, bitch fired Joe Frank, and for that she should pay.

If she's a whack, power-mad she-troll, then she should be fired for being a whack, power-mad she-troll and not on the pretext that letting a single dirty word make it to the air is so heinous that it demands immediate termination. The pretext, if such it is, becomes a standard they must enforce or have it shown as just a pretext.

Crid -- What is there to gain by "exploring" the notion that someone might be a whack, power-mad she-troll? Do you really want to read another juicy pop-psychological interpretation of management style as sexual frustration? Fine, fire Seymour -- but given the current climate around the FCC, chances are another troll will be chosen to replace her. Weener

Ron, Seymour is the W/PM-ST, not Sandra.
Lena, it's the atmosphere in Santa Monica, not DC, that nourishes such corruptions. Look, STL was never my cup o' tea, though I liked the show with Joe Frank a couple months ago. But the thing about KCRW is that even when it does somethign good you can't reward it with a pledge, because Seymour does so many things that are horrific.

"Seymour does so many things that are horrific."
Like WHAT? Her unctuous voice is irritating for sure, but horrific?
PS: Make a $50 pledge and get the discount card. You can use it almost anywhere.

Never: Not a thin dime; not a red penny.
