It's Miller Time Again!
I'll be on Dennis Miller tonight, talking about the state of relationships along with Drew Pinsky and matchmaker Samantha Daniels. (CNBC, 6pm and 9pm on the east coast; 9pm and midnight on the west coast.) Samantha was the subject of a recent New York Times Magazine article on matchmakers, The New Arranged Marriage, by Melanie Thernstrom:

Behind all of Samantha's counsel is a simple message: if you want to marry, don't blow it. Play ball, don't rock the boat, avoid controversy, get along, don't drag her or him into heavy conversations. Go out, have sex, take trips. Eventually, you'll become comfortable, and attachment will grow, and pretty soon you'll be cruising on a lane toward that tollbooth, and it's harder to get off than to go forward. It's not just that you should delay turning on that bright light of serious scrutiny (Is this really the right relationship for me?), which inevitably produces ambivalence; you should leave it off forever.

In brief: Ick.

Now go back and replace political office with marriage....go out, have sex, take trips. Play ball, don't rock the boat, avoid controversy. Skip any serious scrutiny, it causes ambivalence everytime. And your constituents will grow comfortable with you; leading to a long political career which will be no doubt described in retrospect as successful. Can we get another ick?

I could come back and say replace political office...for... marriage. But that would be saying you all aren't smart enough to figure that out, so I won't.

I believe that's 6 and 9 on the WEST coast; 9 and midnight on the East coast. Right?

Uh-oh...well, those are the times they told me. Hope Alkon is not Flake-on again!

Hope Alkon is not Flake-on again!

Again? Was there a previous time??

That description of Samantha's game plan for marriage looks frighteningly akin to an Alberto Gonzales brief on Guantanamo and acceptable torture.

Oh, I have a memory span of about -5 sometimes. I'm good with anthropology data, but bad at remembering what month it is, and like details.

Her opinion reads like cult rhetoric. Just give up your ability to think freely for yourself, don't have an opinion, be sure to please others and ignore your own dreams, don't argue, don't look too closely at the other person, and everything will be just wonderful!

Welcome to Stepford.

You and Dennis Miller, what an unlikely pair. Please tell him to lose the white socks. They just make him look like an idiot.

Posted by: Sheryl at February 23, 2005 4:21 PM

Oh, how I wish I had cable! That article seriously gave me the creeps. Go get 'em!

Posted by: Kate at February 23, 2005 8:17 PM

Spineless wimpy assholes like Samantha need to heed the sage advice of Phyllis Diller:

"Never go to bed angry. Stay up and fight."

Amy, class will out. You were a standout on that stage. I do wonder how someone like Miller ever got to where he is. Pretty mediocre.

You were awesome last night. I hate those panel shows, and that woman Samantha gave me the creeps, but you were great. And you looked great. Such energy, obvious intelligence and beauty.
Dennis Millers appeal escapes me, though.

Thanks so much, guys. I still haven't seen it! Cathy Seipp, Emmanuelle Richard, and I threw a party for the Razzies, and as Todd correctly noted, I indeed got the airtime wrong! I've asked them to do me a favor and send me a tape. Flake-on, indeed.

Off to see Beck and Miss CAT POWER at the Henry Fonda - so at least there's that.

Miss Cat Power? Eartha Kitt?!

They are most kindly making me a copy, and as soon as I have it, it will be posted here.

It was reported to me that la Rouquine was elegant but had lost her identifying curly flaming mane. Also that Lucy was nowhere in sight! Amy, where did you hide her? Don't tell me that you hired a sitter!

She was home making a soufflé.

And I had a previous engagement -- a casting callback to host a show! -- and they asked me to impersonate a sophisticated adult best I could, so I did 40s moviestar hair.

Hi Amy -

Is there any way to obtain a copy of this ?! (smile) We would love to see it over here !

BTW, is this the same "Dennis Miller" that was/is on Saturday Noght Live ? There was a SNL broadcast on a French cable channel last week: dated from ... 1992 !

Don't forget that we long-term expatriates are just that. (smile)

Perhaps, but flake-on made no appearance. I had a friend record the show for me. He is a professor of english and the greek classics... hooked on critical thinking, so to speak. I did not explain why I wanted it recorded. When he passed me the DVD the next day, he commented on the bright well-spoken woman with the fresh ideas who kept getting her momentum snapped by Miller's quasi-tourette's running commentary. Hence my request for the recording, I explained. Kudos!
