I did just send my column samples in to the LA Times, asking to have it considered for one of the features sections. Unfortunately, it's probably a longshot, considering they once sent me a letter telling me to not to bother ever sending them anything again! And I'm not even kidding!

Hello Patrick, oops, I goofed on the quote in a way that doesn't exactly make me look sagacious, but thank you anyway. :-) Clearly shows that I haven't read the Bible for some time. Since I'm not surrounded by Christian fundamentalists around here, no one is going to be mad at me, right?

Hello Frania, I find it interesting that your (French) version of the quote is much closer to how it's worded in German, as we also do without the honour (no pun intended). I used an English translation that I looked up on the 'net since I know that some quotes and proverbs just aren't translated literally. For example, if I say (in German) that the pope "acts like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth", no one would understand that I'm criticizing him.

By the way: Liebetraut - the supporting character from one of Goethe's stageplays who stole this quote about prophets from Jesus - is very quick-witted and funny without being shallow, and full of mockery for real and self-proclaimed authorities. And if I remember correctly (I read it long ago), he gives the advice that turns the play into a totally different direction. In other words: Just imagine him to speak like a typical column written by Amy more than 200 years ago. ;-)
