First Place!
...in the LA Press Club awards in the "signed commentary" (newspapers over 100,000 circ category) for my syndicated advice column.

I was up against Howard Blume (LA Weekly), Thomas Elias (syndicated), Michael Kinsley (LA Times, but previously, founder of Slate), and Chris Weinkopf (LA Daily News). Judging was by a number of out-of-town press clubs.
I also came in second for my column in "signed commentary" (under 100,000 circ) -- beaten by my good friend, Independent staff writer and author Andrew Gumbel. I also came in second in the headline category (under 100,000 circ). The headline was "Love is a Paddle Field," about two parents who were worried their kid would find out about their predilection for S&M.
And, no, my column still doesn't run in my hometown papers!

Great! Congratulations! Party for Amy!
A few words of comfort about your column not running in your hometown papers:
"A prophet has honour everywhere but in his own country." (Goethe, I think.)
So, if the poet was right: When does the German translation of your column come out?
Cheers,
Rainer
By the way: On the picture you look like a film star receiving an Oscar. (You're not crying, though.) So when does the movie about your life as an advice columnist come out? You're in the right town for that one, aren't you? ;-)

Congratulations.
(Someone make a clever allusion to the opening chapter of "You'll Never Eat Lunch in this Town Again," quick!)

Well deserved congratulations! Hopefully this will translate to enough extra syndication that you can afford an open bar for your comments section.

Amy, 1; Kinsley, 0. And yet Amy still thinks there is no God...

Félicitations la Déesse!
>>, wrote Rainier.
The French have a similar saying: "Nul n'est prophète en son pays." = "None is a prophet in one's own country."
Your column may not run in your hometown papers but received the LA Press Club Award and... you've got us!

Congratulations Amy! You look gorgeous and like a film star as Rainer said.

Aww, thanks everybody. And Cathy, your comment was particularly funny!
I did just send my column samples in to the LA Times, asking to have it considered for one of the features sections. Unfortunately, it's probably a longshot, considering they once sent me a letter telling me to not to bother ever sending them anything again! And I'm not even kidding!

Let me congratulate you with the traditional blessing bestowed by editors upon underlings who win awards:
"Yeah, great, OK. But what do you have coming for tomorrow?"

First of all, congratulations and you look stunning in the picture.
Secondly, the ever sagacious and witty Ranier writes:
"A prophet has honour everywhere but in his own country." (Goethe, I think.)If you'll pardon a minor correction, that saying was coined by a little-known fellow named Jesus of Nazareth.
Matthew 13:57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

Hello Patrick, oops, I goofed on the quote in a way that doesn't exactly make me look sagacious, but thank you anyway. :-) Clearly shows that I haven't read the Bible for some time. Since I'm not surrounded by Christian fundamentalists around here, no one is going to be mad at me, right?
Hello Frania, I find it interesting that your (French) version of the quote is much closer to how it's worded in German, as we also do without the honour (no pun intended). I used an English translation that I looked up on the 'net since I know that some quotes and proverbs just aren't translated literally. For example, if I say (in German) that the pope "acts like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth", no one would understand that I'm criticizing him.
By the way: Liebetraut - the supporting character from one of Goethe's stageplays who stole this quote about prophets from Jesus - is very quick-witted and funny without being shallow, and full of mockery for real and self-proclaimed authorities. And if I remember correctly (I read it long ago), he gives the advice that turns the play into a totally different direction. In other words: Just imagine him to speak like a typical column written by Amy more than 200 years ago. ;-)
Gotta go,
cheers to you all,
Rainer
