Another Day In The Life Of A Corporate Tool
The photo below is Lucy with Andy Singer in the background. Talented cartoonist, but, tragically, petting zoo-poor.

I'm at the alternative newspaper convention, where I've shamelessly toted my dog to lure all but the most heartless to my table. In case people passing by for coffee don't see her, I call to them, "Hey, wanna pet my dog?" Only three people have said no, and one girl had allergies.
Some of the cartoonists were grumbling a bit about Lucy's presence, threatening to bring babies as sales tools next year (i.e., they're jealous I thought of it first). Dan Savage made fun of me as he presented the editorial awards (he knows I love it), briefly wearing a small stuffed animal on his shoulder the way I wear Lucy on mine.

"Bee a dear and run Amy's column? I'm a clothes whore, and getups like this are pricey."

It's exhausting being adored all day.

Ooo, I'm jealous! Lucy wearing a pretty little barrette...I can't get my 21-month-old daughter to wear anything in her hair. She rips barrettes right out. And she won't sit nicely on a display table either. Maybe I'll show her this blog and let her see how well LUCY sits and wears HER accessories...

The trick is (and not that Lucy would rip anything out of her hair, or I'd be forced to beat her with a rolled up business card), put an elastic in first, tight, then the barrette. Children and dogs must learn to accept civilizing influences like the constraints of being beautiful. I believe Lucy actually knows she's pretty. I can tell, because she walks differently after she leaves the groomer, and I don't think it's because they nicked any essential areas.
And PS I am sort of kidding about the beauty thing and sort of not. Beauty, for women, is very important, and not to be neglected, because women, thanks to our adaptations between 10 thousand and 1.8 million years ago, are judged by their looks. No, Anna Wintour didn't plot with a bunch of people at Vogue. Women who wear big sacks for clothes and don't do the best they can with their looks are dumb, and missing opportunties -- and not just in the man department. It's less important for men (who are judged more for their status and power). Again, an evolutionary thing.

Don't hate me because I'm Bee-autiful.

DO you have a syndicator at all? Do you do contracts, or do you do it all with handshakes, email and good faith?

Creators syndicates me, but I still sell my column, too. I know the alternative newspaper industry really well...down to the dollar people will pay for my column.
