Santa Monica Homeless People Are More Enterprising
Stef Willen saw these two signs displayed by Santa Monica homeless people:

My goal today: $1000

Every time you tell me to get a job, $2

Cleverest homeless person's sign you've ever seen? (Well, this wasn't a sign, but Marlowe, my former Advice Lady partner, once saw a bum in New York sitting in a doorway with all his worldly stuff, reading Architectural Digest.)

The cleverest one I saw was in Germany. In the pedestrian-only city center, among all the 'bums' with signs stating that they needed help (and no one was giving them any money), was one guy - leaning up against a wall, half asleep, with his hat in front of him - and a sign that simply read "I'm too lazy to work".

His hat was full of money. Guess he got humor points.

In Pacific Beach on a streetcorner, a fellow held up a sign:"I promise to spend your donation on beer!"

Of course, we had to award him a dollar for honesty!

Hi Peggy,

you just raised my curiosity: which city in Germany? (I would like to see that one for myself...)

Let's not pass up an opportunity to mock the Santa Monica mindset!

This guy is the perfect Westside liberal: He thinks wealth is accumulated by arbitrary, inflexible rules, fallen from the sky, which compel random folks to pony over a buck or two. The idea that wealth might instead be generated and therefore earned simply to be mocked... We're supposed to think it's charming that he doesn't care about anything enough to CREATE VALUE.

Poverty is not cute, and cynicism doesn't help.
