July In Paris
Arrived this morning for a month in my favorite city with the miniature dog in tow. Well, actually, she was in my lap under a blanket during most of our flight. She's very well behaved -- probably because I'm a bit of a fascist, and trained her accordingly -- and she'll be perfectly quiet and still if I say "lie down" and "no noise." I could have smuggled her; I think the charge to bring her ($127 each way) is outrageous, considering my 2.5 lb. dog is no more trouble for anyone than my wallet (unlike some Labrador they have to put under the plane). Still, sneaking her on seemed a bit of a risk, considering I was flying on a free ticket. To be fair, I did get a bit of non-standard special service for her. We flew from LA through SFO, where there was a three-hour layover, and no doggie ladies' room facilities, so one of the pilots actually volunteered to take her for a walk on the tarmac-- in SFO and in Paris, when we arrived. Very sweet!
Enjoy Paris in July Amy! After July 14th, you should have the entire city for youself and le tout petit chien, when 98% of the Parisaans goes on holiday.
David Sedaris is giving interviews all over the place and speaks about living in France and speaking the language:
"Q: Has your French improved at all?
A: After a certain point it's all based on the personality. Our neighbors are nice and invite us over, but anything I can get out of I get out of. I'm just timid. My French would be better if I were more outgoing.
You don't have this outgoingness problem Amy! Have fun xoxox

Merci...and so far, so good! Doglet and I went to the grocery store this morning. Her French was impeccable. Mine worked, too.

Have a lot of fun in Paris, Amy!
Waitaminnit: Your dog speaks French? How did you find out? Let me guess: Did she order a sausage all by (and for) herself? ;-)
Rainer, very skeptic about talking animals... at July 4, 2005 8:35 AM
I believe that Lucy speaks French! Mais oui! How could she not?

Let's have a moment of silence to mourn that portion of the ozone layer that was destroyed by this profligate abuse of non-renewable resources.
OK, that's that.
Speaking of French, "Chirac est un ver" is a pretty useful phrase.

Oh, please. Sorry, but they don't have hybrid airliners, nor do I think swimming is an efficient means of travel. You trot this one out all the time. Can't you think of a new way to be negative? Something novel and interesting!
Amy Alkon at July 6, 2005 4:33 PM
Alas, while President Chirac is heroically battling to save the Kyoto Treaty, you Americans destroy our precious global climate by flying your big airliners and driving your SUVs.
It makes me cry for the dolphins.

That must seriously cut into the time you typically spend whimpering about yourself.

How did you know? That's freaky.
