Why can't all fundamentalists be like the Amish -- free to be as nutty and retro as they like, confined within their own little patch of land, allowing their teens to choose to leave for the outside world or not.
I'd be totally cool with that, and I imagine most people would. Govern under Mosaic law, or fundy Islam, so long as it stays within your own community and goes nowhere else.
Fundamentalism isn't confined to religious groups, is it? I mean the secular fundamentalists with rigid doctrinaire beliefs in the Atheist Church, evolutionary psychology, enviro-whackyism, and rampant bad sex and abortion are just as bad.
What we need are people who can put aside their intellectual crutches and really think.
