Stop, Thief! (Uh, We Mean "Valued Customer")
A few Christmas shopping questions from Consumerist.com, a new site I read when I really should be writing:
Do you let retail security people check your bags? What about the whole ‘sign off on your receipt’ thing? And, most importantly, does a person have to submit to those checks?
You can't post comments there, but you can post them here! (Apparently, they're trying to keep the place civilized. I, of course, have no such concerns.)
I spend several hundred dollars every month at my local Best Buy for work & play tech, and they always want to search my backpack. They never get to.
Usually, I have $100-$200 worth of stuff in their bag, and I'm happy to show them the receipt and let them peek into that bag on my way out - but my backpack? Hell no.
It's happened about 20 times. Maybe half the time they just moved on to the next shopper, the other times I had to argue for a minute or two. "I spend $hundreds here every month and I'd like to see the manager to explain why I'm stopping." always gets me out, which is rather disappointing, because I'd love to get a chat with the manager about it.
I can't understand how the richest, freest people in the world are so rapidly becoming such unquestioning sheep and I will never accept it.

I just walk on out. They have no right to search me, none that I know of. I think they'd be in some trouble if they forcibly stopped me.

Oh yeah, and a breezy "no thank you!" always adds a little flair.
