Hi-Hi-Hiltzik-Larious
Seems like we have yet another Internet-naive boy caught in a blogger's Web. Like the dimwits who posted on my Smart & Final entry, and the woman who I knocked for knocking off dresses, it seems Hiltzik was caught by Patterico posting under assumed names on his own Times blog and Patterico's; apparently, not cognizant that the IP address leaves a little techno-trail. Here's me catching dress knocker-offer Jane Langdon justifying profiting from the fruit of others' labor by posting under fake names, same IP address, and even using the email address of a real person who posts on my blog:

Here I am finding multiple names and the same IP address for "Brian Snee," who said he was the kid of the guy from Smart & Final who was dumb enough to auto-dialer me and think he could get away with it:
Whoopsie, and it seems the other three negative comments, from"Kreeped-out," "shame on you," and "Brian Snee"
may be from the same person as well! (I say "may be" because there's a variation in the end of one of the IP addresses, but two out of three are from the exact same one.) See below:

Links to the Hiltzik thing on Kevin Roderick's LAObserved, the first place I turn in the morning (well, right after I delete several thousand comments spam on my own blog!) So...will heads (Hiltzik's) roll at the Times? Your prediction here!

At this hour it looks like Hiltzik is plainly busted. I've never read his columns and have no idea what his politics are. But the LA Times will probably feel compelled to apply some constabulary, angry-schoolmarm discipline for his deceptions. And they probably should... If the accusations are true he deserves a little humiliation.
But not necessarily permanent exclusion, which may be what he gets. We all believe in high standards, but they can produce things like the Clinton Nannygate scandals. If people who have strong, borderline-excessive opinions are kept out of the paper, eventually you'll get something dull and bloodless like...
...Well, you'll get the LA Times, which has lost a lot of customers in recent times.
As a uniformed, beribboned officer in the LA blog scene's Screechy Bitch Squad, I'm ashamed of many comments I've posted to this and other fora. Too many were fueled by coffee, or alcohol, or (most often) my own infantile arrogance. These bungles, like Hiltzik's, wound the argument of the rhetor most of all. The problem is largely self-correcting; sunshine is the best disinfectant etc. It's great that casual frauds are readily exposed, and we cheer when Amy busts a cheat. But Patterico comes off as only slightly less mousey and anal than Hiltzik.

What Hiltzik has done is nothing new.
Using multiple names in an attempt to hide your already anonymous self to make a particularly offensive comment, or create phony allies for your arguments is considered bad form, and cowardly, and has resulted in lots of people being run off of websites, blogs, message boards, video game communities, etc in shame and ridicule.

It was Jane Langdon, it seems, posting under the name of Allan from Ain't It Cool, and I guess, throwing in a little Cathy-bashing to make it seem more Allan-like. (He was, I think, an old LAObserved comments nemesis of both of ours.) I felt compelled to erase it since it wasn't just an assumed name, but an assumed name that already belongs to another person.
PS I found this Hiltzik thing completely hilarious. And "perfidy" is a word I just love, and rarely see used, so thank you.
