Research And You Will Find
Postered presentations of work at the Human Behavior & Evolution Society conference in Philly, at Penn. One of the most amusing was Signs of Love or Signs of Lust? The Value of Body-Modifications as Mate Attraction Cues, by UCLA's Melanie Bromley, who found evidence that lower body tattoos on women indicate a willingness to have a one-night-stand.

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of her poster, because she was in a dark corner (nor do I have a picture of the little red Canadian flag just above a certain other researcher's ass!) but here are a few others:

UPDATE: We caught our researcher friend with the tattoo with her pants down. Well, okay, with her skirt up. Here's the exclusive world premiere look at that Maple leaf of hers:

P.S. Crid, don't say I never did anything for you (i.e., requests for "more welder girlfriend tail").

Vince Vaughn brought this up in The Wedding Crashers."

Is that why it's called a tramp stamp?

Oh Canada...

either that or it's a really trendy way to piss off her father

what i find interesting about tattoos isn't so much WHAT people get tattooed on themselves but where. my old roommate had a jesus fish on his shoulder blade. when i asked him why he got it there, he said he wanted it in a place where he didn't have to see it every day in case he ended up not liking it.

i think tattoos are pretty cool, depending, of course, on the quality of the work, but the body is a poor substitute for canvas. plus, when mothers take their daughters to the tattoo parlor on their 16th birthday to get matching tinkerbell tattoos on their ankles, the cool factor has gone way down.

anyway, back to the point, i think tattoos on people are a sign of impulsiveness, which could lead one to assume that the individual is more prone to a one night stand. conversely, i think it also indicates that they might be willing to commit to something that's basically a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling.
