"Osama" Has Some Of The Same Letters As "Saddam"
"If we withdraw before the job is done, the enemy will follow us here."
--George Bush in his press conference on CNN about staying the course in Iraq
Excuse me, but before we went into Iraq, were the Iraqis really jonesing to "get us"? The enemy that followed us here is in Afghanistan, no? Unfortunately, we've committed our troops to Iraq.
Not in an effort to say something intellectual, but rather to get opinions of people I more or less respect, I want to place this question: Why is the idea of "cutting and running," or pulling out slowly so bad? I mean, beyond the idea that an unstable government makes a better breeding ground for terrorists (who seem more bent on terrorizing on their own ground, really). And beyond the idea of personal responsibility and picking up the mess that we've started, because we know that the people in charge really don't understand the concept of personal responsibility.
If those are the only answers, and they really are justification enough, that's all right, too. I feel like if they were, though, we'd have had the good sense to have stayed out of there in the first place. I've just been really pondering this, and I can't imagine the worst-case scenario being so bad...for us, I mean. And isn't that all most of us care about? And I'm not being heartless, I'm not claiming a place in the "most of us," but I can't help but wonder if fewer Iraqi civilians would die each month if we weren't there.
I'm not there, and I'm DEFINITELY no expert, but like I said, I wanted some opinions on this.

Has anyone ever made the case that Iraq is preventing us from getting things done Afghanistan? Are you making that case now? Can you give us some specifics?
