Psychics Get It Exactly Right On JonBenet
(Except for all the exactly wrong information.) Here's psychic Dorothy Allison on JonBenet's killer:
Allison insisted that the little girl's parents were "absolutely not" involved, and that the real killer was a former handyman. She perceived "connections" to Germany and Georgia, the numbers 2-8-9, and the names "Martin" and "Irving" -- the latter, she said, being "the one I think that did this" (the murder).
Of course, whether it's actually the guy remains to be seen. He sounds nuts, and his ex-wife says he was elsewhere. Is he just a fanatic who studied the crimes? Here's the Alisa Tang AP story:
BANGKOK, Thailand — A former American school teacher said publicly Thursday that he was with JonBenet Ramsey when she died in what he called "an accident," a stunning admission after a decade without answers in the 6-year-old girl's murder. But the suspect's ex-wife said she was with him in Alabama at the time of JonBenet's 1996 death.John Mark Karr, 41, will be taken within the week to Colorado, where he will face charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and child sexual assault, Ann Hurst of the Department of Homeland Security told a news conference in Bangkok.
"I was with JonBenet when she died," Karr told reporters afterward, visibly nervous and stuttering. "Her death was an accident."
Asked if he was innocent of the crime, Karr said: "No."
As he was escorted to his guesthouse to pick up his belongings, Karr told The Associated Press: "I am so very sorry for what happened to JonBenet. It's very important for me that everyone knows that I love her very much, that her death was unintentional, that it was an accident."
Asked what happened when JonBenet died, he said: "It would take several hours to describe that. It's a very involved series of events that would involve a lot of time. It's very painful for me to talk about it."
He told the AP he made "several efforts to communicate with Patricia before she passed away," referring to JonBenet's mother, who died in June, "and it is my understanding that she did read my letters."
No evidence against Karr has been made public beyond his own admission. U.S. and Thai officials did not directly answer a question at the news conference Thursday about whether there was DNA evidence connecting him to the crime.
Karr's ex-wife, Lara Karr, told KGO-TV in California that she was with her former husband in Alabama at the time of JonBenet's killing and she does not believe her former husband was involved in the homicide.
She said her ex-husband spent a lot of time studying the cases of Ramsey and Polly Klaas, who was abducted from her Petaluma, Calif., home and slain in 1993.
Under no circumstances does any mother or child deserve what happened to JonBenet, but I have to say, I found the sexualization of this child at 6 truly creepy. Was it a contributing factor that drew a crazy to her? And what kind of person, pedophile or no, is capable of doing this to any child?

Hmmmm....how does one "accidently" kill another person...?
Rob at August 17, 2006 7:52 AM
According to news reports, supposedly by beating and strangling them...
As for the psychic, I mean, Amy, really, I don't understand why you don't believe in psychics. She was close, wasn't she? John, Irving, those're kind of similar, right? And Germany and Thailand are both countries that are not in the Americas, so they have that in common...I think she did a great job, for a psychic, of course.
Amy, this is also the first time I've seen anything saying that his ex-wife alibis him, so thank you for informing me, too.
Brenda at August 17, 2006 8:06 AM
This is also my first time seeing that his ex-wife gave him an alibi. Considering the charges and the media attention that this case has already recieved, I'm hoping there is conclusive evidence presented. People "confess" to all sorts of things they've never done, and this guy's been gone so long, even his own father presumed him dead, his ex-wife gives him an alibi, and an old college professor says he researched the case extensively for a college newspaper. He's also been in touch for a long time with a journalist in Colorado. It's back to square one all over again as far as I see it. People can say that her parents more or less put her on a chopping block for predators, and that may be true in the sense that a child that age can't really force her parents to go to the lengths they did in beauty contests, but in the end, she wasn't the first or only child then or now to live in a Barbie Doll dreamworld. Girls that aren't even old enough to shave their legs are thrown into every media outlet looking like Paris Hilton anyway these days, and their parents are hardly held accountable when the kid goes missing and their My Space page makes the headlines.

The state of Denmark is rotten, imho.
I'm happy to wait out for more details, but I saw him at a news conference on TV and he looked as though he was reading off of cue cards.
It smells a lot like "I'd rather not spend time in a Thai jail for what they recently just found out I did, so I'm going to cop to something they'll have to take me home for."

Kitt's on to something.

Also, does anyone else think this guy looks like Oppie?

Even if he does look like the poster child for "Creepy Guy", no one has placed him anywhere near Colorado the night this happened. There's DNA evidence that has to be matched and I for one am hoping they have finally solved the case. At least then the family (and every kid this guy has ever come into contact with) can rest easier. For now, there're too many holes. I think it just seems too good to be true. You're right Kitt, he did sound a bit rehearsed. But that ex-wife alibi troubles me the most. Why would an ex-wife who divorced him after child pornography charges were brought against him, turn around and basically blow his whole story unless it was true?
A at August 17, 2006 2:59 PM
Not only is Kitt on to something -- it's what everyone in Boulder is talking about today. (Was on the phone to a friend of mine, a photographer who was outside the Ramseys' old house on 15th St when I got him on his cell.)
Nobody in Boulder has any faith in either the police or the DA's office, both of which have botched this one from day one and have consequently been desperate for years to have any kind of breakthrough to brag about. In her news conf today, the DA acknowledged that Karr may have been arrested not because the case against him was complete but because her office feared he might elude their grasp if they didn't pounce now.
My hunch is they needed to arrest him to do the DNA testing -- so, with luck, we'll know pretty soon if they are barking up the right tree, or simply barking. (Watch for the announcement that the DNA test is "inconclusive" -- a face-saving way of saying he ain't the guy.)
From a psychological point of view, Karr remains pretty interesting. If he's guilty, it suggests that saturation media coverage of the Polly Klaas case in Petaluma in 1993 (where he was living at the time) might have sent him over the edge from a fantasy child-porno freak into a real-life criminal. If he's innocent, it suggests the authorities can't tell the difference between a child-porno fantasist and a real murderer, and are willing to believe the worst even when they have no evidence he so much as set foot in Colorado.
We shall see...

Good to have you back, MP.

My theory is there scorned son did this. Before they had Jonbenet - he was the center of his parents attention. After JonBenet came along his mom tending to all her pageants and her appearance. The night she died - the son was up after they had all retired to bed.

The jury's still out on John Mark Karr. (It's not even been convened yet!) It's a bit early to judge the psychic, though waiting's most likely to be a waste of time. See http://skepdic.com/psychdet.html for an interesting article on so-called psychic detectives.
Norman at August 18, 2006 1:24 AM
I like the way Kitt thinks. Why was this guy living in the sex tourism area in Thailand anyways? Maybe he did something with some kids over there and they have the death penalty for it, so this was his only way to keep on living...just a thought
Canada at August 18, 2006 5:56 AM
Seems like a strange thing to cop to, though. We've all heard the rumors of how child molesters are treated in prison by their fellow inmates. Can a Thai prison really be that much worse? It's a little like giving someone a choice of whether they'd rather be shot through the heart, or stabbed.

"Karr, a teacher and one-time resident of Conyers, Georgia"...there is the Georgia connection, and on his resume it states "Private Teacher / Caregiver (2002-03 in Western Europe) as follows:
Germany: Three girls - 7, 11, and 12: I taught English to the girls through conversational and instructional methods.
I gave computer instruction to the girls via their laptop PC's. I drove the girls to their activities: ballet, riding,
handball, etc. I assisted the girls with their homework.
Germany: Two girls - 5 and 8; boy 10: I taught English to the children through conversational and instructional
methods. I awoke the children in the morning and gave them breakfast. I helped the children get ready for school
and escorted them to the school bus. I helped the 8 year old girl with her homework each day. I took the children
outside for play. At days end, I made sure the children had their evening bath, then put them to bed and read to
them before they went to sleep." ....there is the Germany connection....and the handyman connection? "-Real estate (1981-1996) Privately owned rental business. Restoration of mansions from the Queen Victoria Era." ...im not sure that qualifies as a handyman...but its handymanish...Martin is a detective that he spoke with that was the begining of his downfall."Court records show John Karr told Detective Martin Frey of the Napa County Sheriff's Department that he was writing a book on Richard Allan Davis and that he had a copy of Polly Klaas' death certificate and a letter from Davis at his house. He told Frey "he was welcome to see" them and "that these items were at his old house in a pouch on the floor somewhere."....and irving...john irving..its close.

No matter what, even before JonBenet was killed, her parents sucked the life out of her by depriving her of a normal childhood.
Doobie at August 18, 2006 7:10 PM
Doobie writes:
While a bit melodramatic, I agree. When I present this argument on an AOL message board I frequent, I'm inevitably countered with the fact that Shirley Temple-Black had her start at age three, "and look how well she turned out!" But there are obvious differences. When Shirley Temple performed, she played the role of a perky, irrepressible kid, which is exactly what she was. When JonBenet Ramsey performed, she played the role of a Vegas showgirl, complete with skimpy costumes and makeup. Vegas showgirls are sex objects. This of course, is antithetical to a 6 year old child.
The active imaginations of perverts need no help in seeing a child as a sexual object. It's tantamount to putting her in a barrel full of fish heads, then dumping the entire contents of the barrel in shark-infested waters.
Patrick at August 19, 2006 4:19 AM
They just reported today that Karr's DNA doesn't match that which was found on the body, which takes me back to my theory about Thailand. What the hell did he do there to make him want to confess to this crime, which he obviously didn't commit? There is something going on-any ideas anyone?
Also, I agree with Patrick and Doobie. How sick were her parents to turn her into a sex object at that age? Were they not aware that was what they were doing? How out of touch are these people with sexuality in general? There's a complete disconnect going on in a lot of people's heads, and they have to take responsibility for their actions.
