I found the funniest part to be the almost immediate plea for press attention and donations by the Edwards campaign. Is there a psychology word for nonsense like this?
“John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power,” said his campaign manager, David E. Bonior.
I love the response Coulter gave to the reaction to her joke: Ms. Coulter, asked for a reaction to the Republican criticism, said in an e-mail message: “C’mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.”
On one hand, I cringe at anything that gives this hypocritical shrew more media attention. On the other, it's about damn time. Republicans are always calling on Democrats to denounce remarks by the fringier elements (and politically insignifigant backwater academics like Ward Churchill) or calling on black politicians to denounce the latest Al Sharptonism, so a little turn about is fair play.

she's like andrew dice clay in that she doesn't actually crack jokes. at what point does one cease to fear being labeled politically correct?
Seriously - what's with this whole "you must denounce what this person who claims to be a member of your political party said or you believe it too" train of thought?
Is it derived from the desire to see some (any) muslim condemn the acts of the leaders of their religion?
I mean, it's not the same, is it? Ann Coulter has precisely zero power. Yet her words are treated the same as those of a sitting senator (Lott comes to mind immediately) or a ruling imam.
The proper course of action with a loudmouth like Coulter, Buchanan, Sharpton, Franken, Maher -- IGNORE THEM.
By demanding that people denounce her, you give her exactly what she craves - sweet, sweet attention.
Although I have to say that her retort is beautiful. That's like saying "I'd call you a piece of shit, Senator, but that would insulting to excrement."

Beyond the thundering herd of politicians going to the first microphone available to denounce a columnist calling a fairy a faggot, just what is the acceptable way to refer to the Jeff Gordon of the Democrat party? BTW, that perception of John Edwards is only reinforced when one catches his hair primping video.
In the most common usage that I have heard, faggot is used to describe the effeminate behavior of a male, even in that “I want my MTV” song. Even when I hear self-identifying homosexuals use it about others it is that same context. Most frequently, when people describe themselves or others as homosexual, they use a hijacked word like “gay” or “queer”. Of course, we have all heard exceptions.
Do the Queer Nation folk have a guide for the words heterosexuals are allowed to use and the ones that are for homosexual use only?
Ahhh, the value of free speech: identifying who gets to do it and who doesn't!
It also is excellent at flushing out those who cannot think, and only react. As those rush to counter Coulter, it's a powerful reminder of the great evil of political correctness: the idea that calling it something else will actually let you pick up a turd by the clean end.
People think this is important. They will spend all kinds of time on this, rather than challenge their Congress-slug as to why they are not doing their sworn duty vis-a-vis Iraq.

deja pseu,
Oh, and just wondering, if Ann or Rush used the word "kyke" as part of a "joke", would those of you defending her remarks now be OK with that?
No, I wouldn't and nor would I for any other racial or ethnic slur. I did not geive Rev. Jackson a pass for hymie town and I would not give anybody a pass for kyke or nigger either, for that matter.
If Ms. Coulter called the Honerable Dennis Kucinich an extraterrestrial I would give her a pass and not just because I call him that on a regular basis, but because that is the way he choses to behave.
I would take exception if someone described Bobby Trendy as a badass, or take it for the joke that they must be trying to make, because he does not begave or even attempt to look like any possible version of a badass.
People think this is important. They will spend all kinds of time on this, rather than challenge their Congress-slug as to why they are not doing their sworn duty vis-a-vis Iraq.
I think most of them are too old to be of any use in battle, assuming they even passed the physical.
Well, if Edwards was a Republican, we would hear about how he was an opportunistic, money-grubbing ambulance-chasing lawyer deep in the pocket of the working American due to his keen eye for the crippled. Endlessly.
But now he gets a pass.

Not with me. The fact that he and his campaign went with the irrational, knee-jerk-man-blaming Amanda Marcotte as one of his bloggers says everything about him. I find him inconsequential as a potential presidential candidate, which is a couple of steps down from me loathing him as a presidential candidate.
Ann is usually pretty funny, because she's usually hitting pretty close to the mark. I've never thought of the scumbag in question as a corksucker. Perhaps he is. But it's not nearly as funny as her intro of Christopher Hitchens, where she says, "I always love to hear Christopher speak, because I know he's going to call the President (Clinton) a rapist. Truth is the soul of wit.
Deja, damn you're a bitter thing, aren't you.

Well, I do not recall what my real estate guy had to say about Edwards, but I can recall what he says about himself in comparison to folk like Edwards: "I may be queer, but I am no fag."
Yes, I suspect The Ann meanto to say faggot, but not in the "sword swallowing" way but in the pink Rambler way. Even the John Kerry Swiss Cheesteak way.
I'm sure she meant to say faggot, in the "Hey, cameramen, over here!" way. And meaning-wise, I'd guess she's making a crack about his pretty hair, not his tendency to throw on hot pants and rollerskate through the Castro carrying a mini Chihuahua.
Think of a mosquito. You can expend a little energy killing it, or expend a lot of energy protecting yourself from it, or put yourself at risk by letting it bite you. Ann cannot kill you with a bite, and killing her is a zero-sum game. We who are sane are compelled to respond to irritants, so we must band together and deny her an audience without which she will irreversibly wither and fade.

It's all fun and games until someone breaks a nail.
In the most common usage that I have heard, faggot is used to describe the effeminate behavior of a male, even in that “I want my MTV” song.
BULLSHIT! Yes, let's make our case by invoking a song that was released in 1985 and is ambiguous in its use anyway. Does anyone listen to "Money For Nothing" by the Dire Straits and think they get a clear definition of the word "faggot" from it?
Coulter's own words make it abundantly clear that she meant "homosexual" when she called Edwards a "faggot," for those so disingenous and dishonest as to try to pretend that she merely suggested Edwards wasn't very masculine, and in this very thread, you find the evidence.
“C’mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.”
You'll notice that she conflates "faggot" with "gays" in this coy little "apology." Therefore, she not only called Edwards a homosexual, she called all homosexuals "faggots," since in her nasty little cesspool of a mind, "gay" and "faggot" are interchangeable.
