How To Teach Your Kids To Binge Drink
Addiction treatment specialist Stanton Peele, author of Addiction Proof Your Child, on showing your kids what responsible drinking is -- by drinking with them before they hit the legal drinking age. The lady in the split screen apparently thinks it's healthier to forbid them alcohol, possibly or likely leading them to celebrate turning 21 with a bender.
First of all, TV news sucks, and people shouldn't watch it or participate in it.
Secondly, I dunno about this one. Binge drinking by non-alcoholic young people seems to be a popular if stupid way to deal with other stresses in life (sexual tensions, maybe). If a glass of wine with dinner on a kid's twelfth birthday can reduce this madness, then why not?
But the people who we really oughta worry about with this are the alcoholics, and that's a largely genetic condition. And once that process gets activated, we're screwed. That short serving of port from Mom or Dad was just tickling the dragon's tail, and it doesn't mean the monster's going to be any gentler once it starts spitting fire.
[Confession: I couldn't watch the clip all the way through, and just sampled some 5-second snippets. Television is revolting.]

Ditto on TV - the whores! What's the value in getting 2 opposing experts to argue for 3 minutes with no resolution? Worse than useless. The experts should also be accountable for getting at the real truth instead of blindly defending their position (or shilling their book). But I think Dr. Peele is probably "righter" than whatshername.
I once called a local station and ripped the news director a new asshole for breaking in with a story about a downed plane that left from the local metro airport - I knew that there was no way the airline had had time to call the passengers' families before the story ran. He just said news is news, and we run it.
