Separation Of Nuts And State
Do we really want a guy who believes in this wacky stuff running our country?
Oh yeah...and are Mitt's wacky, evidence-free beliefs really that much odder than the wacky, evidence-free beliefs of the rest of the candidates? More on Mormonism here. An excerpt of a few Mormon beliefs here:
God was once a man like us.
God has a tangible body of flesh and bone.
God lives on a planet near the star Kolob.
God ("Heavenly Father") has at least one wife, our "Mother in Heaven," but she is so holy that we are not to discuss her nor pray to her.
Jesus was married.
We can become like God and rule over our own universe.
There are many gods, ruling over their own worlds.
Jesus and Satan ("Lucifer") are brothers, and they are our brothers - we are all spirit children of Heavenly Father
Jesus Christ was conceived by God the Father by having sex with Mary, who was temporarily his wife.
We should not pray to Jesus, nor try to feel a personal relationship with him.
The "Lord" ("Jehovah") in the Old Testament is the being named Jesus in the New Testament, but different from "God the Father" ("Elohim").
In the highest degree of the celestial kingdom some men will have more than one wife.
Before coming to this earth we lived as spirits in a "pre-existence", during which we were tested; our position in this life (whether born to Mormons or savages, or in America or Africa) is our reward or punishment for our obedience in that life.
Dark skin is a curse from God, the result of our sin, or the sin of our ancestors. If sufficiently righteous, a dark-skinned person will become light-skinned.
The Garden of Eden was in Missouri. All humanity before the Great Flood lived in the western hemisphere. The Ark transported Noah and the other survivors to the eastern hemisphere.
Not only will human beings be resurrected to eternal life, but also all animals - everything that has ever lived on earth - will be resurrected and dwell in heaven.
Christ will not return to earth in any year that has seen a rainbow.
Mormons should avoid traveling on water, since Satan rules the waters.
The sun receives its light from the star Kolob.
If a Gentile becomes Mormon, the Holy Ghost actually purges his Gentile blood and replaces it with Israelite blood.
A righteous Mormon will actually see the face of God in the Mormon temple.
You can identify a false angel by the color of his hair, or by offering to shake his hand
My personal favorite: "The Garden Of Eden was in Missouri." Hmmm, why not in Ohio, Rhode Island, or upstate New York?

That video was hilarious! And did the child Elohim (sp?) look like his eyes were glazing over even in the cartoon or what?
I'd say it's no worse than any other but the polygamy and the racism do make me rethink that. However, I'm not sure it's any scarier than a president who believes he's president because God gave it to him.
Donna at December 19, 2007 5:09 AM
That's some crazy shit.
Roger at December 19, 2007 5:13 AM
O_O ?? That shit be whack, and I don't mean maybe!
Flynne at December 19, 2007 5:54 AM
A little bit sensationalist (and outdated) but for the most part true. However, you would be hard pressed to find a Mormon who actually knows about these teachings for they are never promulgated to the masses (other than blind obedience). Although what is shown here is fairly absurd, to read the real history of Mormonism and the details of when they truly believe is several quanta more so.
Doc Jensen at December 19, 2007 6:27 AM
If you were to make a cartoon depicting the history and logical failing of ANY religion it would look stupid.
Nobody faithful really stops to think about their religion, and those who do wake up
lujlp at December 19, 2007 6:51 AM
Weird, for sure. I had thought Mormons were just another branch of Christianity, but this account has several important differences. It looks like they recognise Jesus, but I'm not sure he'd be the same person the mainstream Christians have in mind.
It reminded me of Superman's genealogy - Kal-el and so on. What was his dad called?
I always find it odd that in religious depictions like this one, people are wearing what looks like ancient Arab dress - albeit cleaned up and made of washable, non-iron polyester cotton. And the men usually have magnificent beards. What's that about? I can understand why The Watchtower shows ancient Earth people in ancient Earth clothes, but why should the people on another planet dress like Arabs? Especially since I doubt if the gold plates said anything about attire, any more than the Bible says about Yahweh's threads. So it's all speculation. Shows lack of imagination, IMO.

>> Christ will not return to earth in any year that has seen a rainbow.
It's gonna be a long wait....
eric at December 19, 2007 9:05 AM
PS- Supermans Dad was Jor-El, played by none other than Marlon Brando!
eric at December 19, 2007 9:06 AM
Superman's dad was Jor-El.
The HBO show Big Love got me interested in learning more about LDS and FLDS. After reading several books and numerous websites on Mormonism, I have decided that Joseph Smith just wanted to have sex with as many women as possible and so created a religion where he could do that without "sinning."
Speaking of religious nuts, have you heard about Huckabee's Iowa video? http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2007/dec/19/huckabee-ad-just-a-harmless-greeting/
Amy at December 19, 2007 9:07 AM
PPS- Did any of you see the Christian handout magazine last month describing the current war between good and evil in Heaven? Everybody was dressed like Star Wars, including Light Sabers! There was even a Silver Angel on a surfboard! I almost dropped it in the mail to Amy but figured she get's enough stuff like that!
eric at December 19, 2007 9:10 AM
I actually confronted a mormon on his "mission" about his beliefs once. And he had no idea what I was talking about. Sad.
Shinobi at December 19, 2007 9:15 AM
Yep, that stuff gives crazy a bad name.
Regarding a presidential candidate, however, what I'm concerned with is performance. If I had any reason to believe that this crazy nonsense actually influenced Romney's actions, he would, in my estimation, be disqualified for any office higher than second assistant dogcatcher. To this point, I haven't seen any evidence that Romney believes (or ever believed) the crap about black people, for instance, or made any decisions based on a belief in the planet Kolob.
Compare Romney to Huck: "I would not deny that my sense of the reality of redemption is a factor," Mr. Huckabee told KUAR in Little Rock in 2001. "I don't know that I can apologize for that because I would hate to think of the kind of human I would be if I thought people were beyond forgiveness." Huck's religious beliefs led him to commute/pardon twice as many criminals as the previous three Arkansas governors combined. That sort of crap concerns me greatly. One Jimmy Carter is more than enough.
As one of those scary extreme right-wing wacko Christians, I follow Christ's example by not putting much stock in words. The religious leaders of Christ's day were great at reciting scripture and loudly touting their own righteousness as they ignored the needy and privately lived just as sinfully as anyone else. Jesus called them hypocrites and "blind guides." He used the analogy of a fruit tree -- you can tell the type of tree by the fruit it grows. If a tree is labeled "apple," but you see pears growing on it, you can safely ignore the label.
I'm aware that Romney's views on numerous issues have changed over the years; so have mine. If anyone can cite actions by Romney that should concern me, I'm all ears.
Identifying a candidate with a particular religion allows people to take easy potshots. The fact that a candidate is not identified with a particular religion will prevent those potshots, but that doesn't mean the candidate is devoid of crazy beliefs that influence their actions.
(BTW, Romney isn't my #1 choice. Of the top tier, Thompson is my pick, but it doesn't look like he has much of a chance. I'd settle for Romney or Giuliani, but Huck worries me. Sound strange coming from a Christian? Like I said, I put more stock in actions than words, and I'd rather elect a straight-shooting philanderer than a misguided pastor.)
Splashman at December 19, 2007 9:39 AM
Amy, what are we trying to accomplish here? EVERY candidate will at some point express how important religion is to them, even if its not true. If we're going to scrutinize each one's fundamentalist foundations, they'll all be disqualified. We might as well be poking fun at youtube clips of "Davye and Goliath."
Huckabee is a mystery to me. His recent press is concerning, but a very knowledgeable (and lifelong Democrat) friend of mine instists he's the least of all Republican evils. Apparently, he actually takes the "compassionate conservative" stuff to heart and has fairly strong track record towards combatting poverty and preserving the environment. Amazingly, he seems impervious to the recent revelations of his mid-'90s anti-AIDS research statements and his own Willie Horton moment. More research required.
snakeman99 at December 19, 2007 9:51 AM
Whould that be Fred "By the way homos give me the willes" Thompson?
lujlp at December 19, 2007 10:06 AM
Luj - you're thinking of Edwards. His wife quickly corrected his public pronouncements on that.
Huck and Romney are both too liberal for my tastes. Huck is a big spender and a nanny-stater to boot. Romney wants government to tell me how to spend my money, which is hardly different from stealing my money because he knows how to spend it.
Thompson is the only thing resembling a conservative in the race. Can we dust of Ronaldus and run him again? Does the 22nd amendment prohibit someone from taking a third term if they've died?
brian at December 19, 2007 1:35 PM
What about Newt?
Amy Alkon at December 19, 2007 1:37 PM
Newt is truly smart, but he doesn't connect well with people. He tends to lecture.
That, plus his baggage, will keep him out.
doombuggy at December 19, 2007 2:11 PM
New Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has answered "no" when asked on BBC radio if he believed in God. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7151346.stm
Interesting to see a political leader admitting to atheism. There is, however, virtually no chance of the Lib Dems getting any power to speak of for the foreseeable future. Perhaps this gave Nick Clegg the courage to come out - he has nothing to lose.
Norman at December 19, 2007 3:10 PM
Although I'm not at the point I say, "By the way homos give me the willes (sic)", I must admit I can only theorize, with no small amount of effort, how a guy can pass up some goddess for another hairy beast like himself. I have to engage higher brain functions to realize that's how he was built. A short conversation with, say, George Takei will show anyone that these are not by any means evil people, but that's clearly not an example I can follow, even as I routinely root out the ignorance of the typical American about gender orientation. There is no reward for the layman to learn anything, apparently, and so our candidates must appeal to the Lowest Common Duh-nominator to get elected.
Radwaste at December 19, 2007 4:38 PM
That's not the scary stuff about LDS. All religions have wacky myths. The scary part of LDS is the "only men have authority" parts. Elizabeth Smart grew up in a mainstream Mormon home, and she was easily brainwashed by the polygamist who kiddnapped her, because all his weird rap made sense, thanks to her LDS training. Look hard at the LDS church actions--like the buying up of historic documents that put the church in a bad light, like the Mountain Meadows Massacre.
Kate at December 19, 2007 7:03 PM
The mountain medow massacre is just one of thousands of stories in american history where killers and criminals wound up dead at the hands of their former victims
What is supprising to me in that bit of americana is they were so fucking stupid as to surrender their weapons to the people they once persecuted
what were they thinking?
'Uh, yea so we killed a bunch of them stole everything they couldt take with 'em when they fled. But we'll trust them to safegaurd our weapons and give us safe passage'
Quite frankly that was darwinism in action, people that fucking stupid deserve to die
lujlp at December 19, 2007 10:15 PM
So Huckabee was putting aside political ads for the holidays -- by putting out a special holiday political ad. People actually fall for this? As I've always told my daughter -- this is your brain on religion.
Donna at December 20, 2007 7:57 AM
Stupid shit Christians believe
7th Day Advents believe the second coming was in the fall of 1844 – apparently we are already in paradise, or hell
FYI a well know off shoot of the Adventists were the branch davidians, we all remember Waco right?
Pentecostals believe in speaking in tongues, however no two translation of recorded so called ‘tongue speak’ are ever the same
Jehovah Witness believe that only a certain number of people get into heaven, given the number of worlds god supposedly created, no one from this world will get in
Calvinists believe there is no free will, and every action you take is gods will – so we are all puppets and not responsible for anything we do (wonder why no one uses this as a criminal defense)
Calvinists also believe that god has already chosen those worth for heaven, you just might find yourself there with Hitler or Manson and find out Christ wasn’t foreordained and has to spend eternity in hell
Lutherans believe their faith is a false one, just slightly better than Catholicism – as to why you would believe in something you believe to be false, get a Zen master to wrap their minds around that conundrum
Anglicans believe in the divine right of serial killer kings (namely Henry the 8th) to get a divorce
Puritans are dammed to hell for editing the bible – not my choice it’s in the bible, big warning in revelation DO NOT EDIT UNDER PAIN OF ETERNAL DAMNATION
Methodists, Catholics and Presbyterians have rote prayers something strictly forbidden by Jesus
Baptists believe that one day God up and decide to stop giving people prophets and signs and gift of the holy sprit like revelation and healing. Why God would change after thousands of yrs is a question most never ask. Most never ask why con artist Baptist preaches claim to be able to heal the sick when they believe it is no longer a skill preachers get
Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics pray to pictures and statues of saint and the ‘virgin’ Mary violating the one foundation of Christianity NOT WORSHIPING ANY BEING OTHER THAN GOD
Trinity - the belief that god is one being with three personalities
Here are a few questions for trinity believers
IF Jesus and God are the same person why did Jesus ask god to forgive the Romans?
IF Jesus and God are the same person why did Jesus ask god not to let him suffer in the garden
IF Jesus and God are the same person why did Jesus say not my will but your be done
IF Jesus and God are the same person why did Jesus in the 9th hour call out ‘my god why have you abandoned me?
IF Jesus and God are the same person why did Jesus say he was the son of god?
IF Jesus and God are the same person why did Jesus never say I AM GOD?
So any church that believes in the doctrine of trinity must believe Jesus to be a liar and a schizophrenic with muli-personality disorder
In conclusion anyone who believes this crap is sadly lacking something in their life; I beg

I recently kicked the Mormon habit...after 66 years of smoking their dope. Seeing all these absurd non-truths listed this way was like seeing the antithesis of the Lord's Prayer plastered on a billboard at Christmas time. I write sci-fi books and just realized I've been carrying around, in the body of this list, the elements of not only an outa-sight fantasy, but an outa-sight farce. If the Mormon creed listed above were to prove to be true, who would want to live in the after-life with somebody stupid enough to have believed it while he or she lived in mortality? But the real tragedy is that there are real live men living in Salt Lake City today who are able to rule millions of people with an iron hand because their slaves know nothing about such a list...it meaning...or its implications. (Although, many less people than the millions they claim.) To read the writings of Joseph Smith, particularly those of his later years, is to read the rantings of a mad man. Your neck gets stiff from shaking your head from side to side in total amazement that so called intelligent people could tolerate this kind of megalomaniacal drivel. Just goes to show how desperate many people are for sound leadership. I wish we had one of those...a sound leader...running for president. Instead we have men and woman who are just as big a slobs as us. And that is scary. And very sad.
