A Call for a Presidential Debate on Science and TechnologyGiven the many urgent scientific and technological challenges facing America and the rest of the world, the increasing need for accurate scientific information in political decision making, and the vital role scientific innovation plays in spurring economic growth and competitiveness, we call for a public debate in which the U.S. presidential candidates share their views on the issues of The Environment, Health and Medicine, and Science and Technology Policy.

What a crazy idea! This would merely be a memorization test of the candidates; these guys are not scientists and would just be regurgitating what their advisers had trained them to say.

Do you think any other debate is any different? Science is vital to our future, and I want to hear the candidates talk about it. Of course, I'm for Newt Gingrich's idea of nine, 90-minute, unscripted debates, wild and free.

Science Debate would not be a pop quiz. The Op Ed in Huffington Post explained that.
It would serve to demonstrate how the candidates feel about critical issues related to science and making it a national priority (as it ought to be) from health to the environment.
I've signed on. We all should.

Honestly, if we are going to prioritize matters then we should have debates on law (and legal principles) and economics way before we get to science.
Part of the reason why I am down on the idea of a debate is that I think government has as much business funding science as it does funding churches or building sports stadia, and I think presidential candidates have as much business debating each other on things like evolution as they do debating whether women have souls or the infield fly rule.
