A Sex Worker On A Sex Buyer
Former sex worker Tracy Quan writes in the IHT about what an idiot Spitzer was for using an escort service, which she calls "the riskiest form of indoor prostitution I have ever experienced":
Escort agencies are constantly being investigated, infiltrated and spied on.I worked for two escort agencies when I first started in the sex trade, and both were closed down - not by Spitzer, but under circumstances that he would recognize. I was terrified when the police raided the apartment that served as a booking office for the second agency. Those of us who were not arrested endured petty racist comments from the officers for about two hours.
I chose to work for an escort service because I was young, starting out in a precarious industry, alone in the city and, like those hapless customers who are arrested in street sweeps, without connections. Working for an escort service was a way to earn my living and keep a roof over my head.
But when the chance to work for a madam with a steady supply of reliable clients arose, I was relieved.
That someone like the governor of New York would shop for sex through an Internet escort service is mind-boggling.
...Well-connected men . . . have typically sought out sex workers who have been recommended by their friends and who don't have Web sites. Escort agencies are supposed to be out of the question for old-school rakes who want to protect their marriages and careers.
Hummm,
I will try to remember that.
Good points

Have no problem with people who use hookers, just don't get caught.

In Spitzers case I think the problem is that he didn't know anyone on the inside. I'm not sure if his acts were stupidity or desperation. I can't imagine his marriage was much fun.
I'm not sure what his wife's motivation for staying with him is at this point. It wasn't for the love/sex and he doesn't have the power any more.

Maybe one of the adults is thinking about the kids?
Who knows...

Thanks, Jody. I believe the Spitzers have either two or three daughters? Not sure how old they are.
Pirate Jo at March 12, 2008 6:36 PM
Jo - read somewhere else that they have three, aged 13, 15, 17.
Of course, you realize that this is going to negatively impact their dating prospects. After all, in the status-obsessed circles in which they travel, social position is everything. They went from "The Governor's Daughters" to "The children of Client 9".
So that means the boy with the scholarship to Yale Law is out. She might have to settle for a Columbia undergrad. Or (the horror) CUNY.
Won't SOMEBODY think of the CHILDREN???

"Quan"
I didn't read much of the post, or follow the link, but I remember Tracy Quan as one of the names that turned up on Salon or Nerve or one of the many other hipper-than-thou sites that populated the internet back in the dial-up days.
So she's still at it. There are people who still buy Cher's records... Certain market segments pick their favorite brands early, and then die with them. Quan seems to have cornered the sector for high-school-junior-level readers who want to believe in sexual sophistication learned from the mean streets of the heartless city they call _____ (wherever).
I think it's a scam, and it's not aging well.
> I was young, starting
> out in a precarious
> industry
First of all, can you imagine young sex worker thinking that way? ("I'll be be blowing fat, sweaty guys for another forty-five years or so, until the no-load index funds are on a good upswing, then I'll get out and open miniature golf course in East St. Louis....")
Secondly, what's "precarious" about the "industry"? There will always be children of violent divorce ready to work the streets, phone, or hotels... Venue be damned, they'll always have customers.
This (as quoted) is just not thoughtful commentary. She woke up Tuesday, turned on the tube, and presumed that someone would expect her to have an opinion about Swizter. So this is what she turned in... Rote, hollow, insensate.
She's either a shitty writer or a shitty sex worker. I'd wager she's both.
