The call to prayer is purposely intrusive. It seeks to dominate everyone within earshot. What it represents is ugly and unwelcome in the civilised world, where it doubles as a call to conquest.

The peal of cathedral bells can be intrusive, too. Both the bells and the azaan call the faithful to prayer and serve as timekeepers for the heathen.
Christianity has long since given up the canonical hours prayer ritual (i.e., matins, lauds, vespers) that Islam retains.
Like Dawkins, I prefer the bells to the azaan, but realize that as out-of-place as the azaan would be in Winchester, the bells would be in Rabat.
And, no, I don't find Dawkins' comment racist. I find in it the wistful nostalgia of a 77-year-old pondering the changes in the world since his childhood.
The blue states discover the 10th Amendment. Welcome to the party, pal!
The lawsuit argues that the tax law violates the 10th Amendment governing states’ rights by infringing on their authority to make sovereign decisions on local investments, and that federal lawmakers have acknowledged that the cap was intended in part to force states to reduce their spending.
The lawsuit also says the cap exceeds Congress’ constitutional authority to impose and collect taxes because it coerces states into lowering their taxes and then cutting services that the taxes support.
Regulation- and tax-minded ninnies, whether left of right, must stand down.

The average rates may be the same, but the it's in the details where the disparity lies. For instance, the EU charges a 10% tariff on imported automobiles - from all countries. The US charges 2.5%.

Loved the opening paragraph of this:
"For the well-off in both rich and poor countries around the world, lives are enriched by plentiful access to energy that provides light, fresh food, and clean water, and that powers technology and allows the ability to control the temperature."
A lot of environmentalists don't seem to understand the getting clean water to all the residents and sewage away from them means pumping it. And that means pumping stations powered by electricity.
It's not enough to give each hut a solar panel or windmill. An entire grid needs to be laid in - with a reliable power source at its core. And that reliable power source is not a solar or wind farm, it's an oil, gas, or nuclear power plant.
Say what you want about FDR's New Deal being a communist plot, but the REA and TVA brought electricity and, with it, modern civilization, to places in America that might still be using outhouses and lanterns without the upgrade. With electrification, American civilization leapfrogged Europe.
Watching the original Get Carter a few years ago, I was struck by the fact that pubs in 1971 Newcastle were still using outhouses. Even in Popeye Doyle's gritty New York City, a pub-goer was able to use a proper, if filthy, indoor loo.
As of 2010, The Guardian estimated around 40,000 houses in the UK have an outdoor privy.
And the cancer factoid was "especially illuminating."
But I think it's important to consider that by their relative character, ambition and intelligence, Hillary probably knew the workings of the electoral college sixty years before Trump knew it existed, or was told he'd have to care about it.

Heh. This is how you get more Trump: try to tell your residents that your state bloat SHOULD BE DEDUCTIBLE on Federal taxes. Insist that you have a RIGHT to taxpayer money!

That still puzzles me.
By all measures, she should have been running away with that race like Secretariat at the Belmont Stakes. Instead like Sham, her handlers bet everything that the other horse would find the race too long and tire out before the finish only to find their own horse losing steam in the backstretch.

The last time I can remember homosexuality being used so openly, aggressively and constantly an insult was in the 1980s. Homophobic themes and imagery as a means of demeaning and degrading people are now 100% acceptable and popular again (but with progressivism in the heart).
We don't have anywhere near the "military-industrial complex" today that Eisenhower warned us about.
If we lost an aircraft carrier to a swarm of stealthed supersonic cruise missiles - or five conventional torpedoes - how fast could we replace it, and how?
