Other problems with this -

* people simply say they are of a difference ethnic group to benefit (e.g. Elizabeth Warren)

* beneficiaries are not the most disadvantaged, but cream of the disadvantaged group, who were likely going to do just fine without affirmative action

* causes incentives for Whites not to work as hard -as jobs are handed out based on ethnic group rather than merit, so they are not going to get the job regardless of how hard they work

I don't see the conflict Snoopy. I think you are getting too caught up in the 'benevolent' word. You can be a 'gentleman murderer'. Ever so polite and nice. Well, up until he chops your head off. Still a murderer no matter how nice you are about it. Or white knighting. It comes from a good place, a desire to help and protect. But that isn't good enough. White knighting is still toxic no matter it's benevolent origins.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Or if you prefer there is the one about how the tyranny of those who do it 'for your own good' is far far worse than those who are greedy or personally vile.

I get the intended meaning of the "benevolent racism" label. But, as Snoopy is trying to point out, there's nothing benevolent about it. It is a claim of legal and social privilege, based on class membership. What Srivistata is saying is that, in spite of the fact that by his own admission the current editor has done a great job, said editor is not qualified for the position due to being a member of an untouchables caste.

Who gains from this? Lindsey and other members of his ethnicity and sex obviously suffer harm, as they are discriminated against. The journal's readers do not benefit, as the journal is excluding part of the pool of qualified editors, and so potentially overlooking the person most qualified for the job. And the minorities who get such jobs suffer from the "Harvard effect", which has two sides: (1) some minorities are placed in positions for which they are not qualified, and (2) the ones who are qualified suffer from the stigma of being "quota hires". It's a vicious cycle. The only ones who benefit from this sort of thing are the leftist ruling class, who gain from creating divides and dissension in the classes below them, which makes them easier to repress.

4. But competent people don't want to fill these positions because of all the BS

5. So incompetent activists take them and then proceed to harass the rest of the organization to become more political

I don't think you get how science works. Falsifiablity is the cornerstone of science and what distinguishes it from pseudo science.
That means that cherished ideas get whalloped from time to time. Good. That's progress.
Happens in biology, happens in physics. All the time. Doesn't happen much in chemistry but then we've pretty much finished that one (Yay, team human!)
A bunch of largely atheoretical studies can't get replicated. That doesn't "hurt" psychology--it's showing that we are doing our jobs properly.

The problem in psychology is that that isn't happening. When an important result turns out to be non-reproducible, the scientists who reported that fault are simply labeled racists, and the rest of the field goes on as before, admiring the Emperor's new suit. I'll have to dig up the link, but I saw the results of a survey last week in which a substantial number of people in the field refuse to study or talk about evolutionary psychology for ideological reasons, not because results from that field are being disproven, but because reporting such results would be "harmful". At that point, it's no longer science. It's religion.
