That would be asshole "environmental" car company Polestar abusing my Venice neighborhood with illegal construction with heavy machinery and annoying backup beeps while building some monstrosity for an event they're having. Law in LA says construction must stop at 9 p.m. on weeknights.
My head was still throbbing with the backup beeps and loud machinery from their continuing construction after 10. And this after all day noise from the Polestar workers with no consideration for neighbors feet away -- no "let's do our best to be considerate."
I have to be up at 5 a.m. to write. After 10, I sent their press rep an email (after what I thought was a nice convo Thurs a.m.) saying I hope Polestar would permit my neighbors and me to go to bed (by stopping their asshole illegal noise), as a number of my neighbors work on movie sets and must be up at 3 a.m. to get there.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
"Environmental"!

And remember that the video on that link is random… Listen and tap your foot, but ignore what you see.
Also, when you type "Rubber Shirt" into the internet, it takes you to Etsy... Because humanity is insane.

Yes corrugated tubes offer more efficient heat transfer. But there are more concerns in a design than a single issue. If this is a water heater does the water have things that would precipitate out? If you have hard water then those features will get coated and the pipe will clog. Obviously a corrugated pipe will cost more than a smooth bore. Is the cost more than the efficiency improvement is worth?
Your AC uses freon as a working fluid. But most power plants use water instead. There are lots of more efficient working fluids than water. The thing is water is cheap, readily available, and environmentally friendly. For that application water is the better choice.

Probably not very. It looks to be an inefficient means of attack unless one is going after a specific person. Your most vulnerable one might be your phone or laptop. Reading from the tweeted article (emphasis mine):
Ugh. So for your headset, they can eavesdrop on your choice of music. Now, if you're using a headset to make phone calls, they can listen to that. They can see what you're typing on a bluetooth keyboard. Typically, this is at a distance of 10 meters or less. This article states that there are 3 types of devices - range of 100 m, 10 m, and less than 10 m:
https://www.scienceabc.com/innovation/what-is-the-range-of-bluetooth-and-how-can-it-be-extended.html
I would presume that most consumer devices are in the 10 meter or less class. The obvious dick move will be to jam your comms and preform a denial of service attack.
I mean, they bungled bluetooth.
Well, yeah. Details matter, and it is so easy to bungle something and not even realize that's what you've done. The Nazi engima machine operators didn't realize the same "good morning" message was helping the code breakers at Bletchly Park to decrypt their secret messages.

Look at your reactions Crid. You are just a generally pissed off person. Doesn't take anything from me or anyone else to do that. And when you are all emotional you can't respond rationally. How many times have you pulled that 'Ever kissed a girl?' junk out?
IRA, the bluetooth thing has some interesting economic impacts due to that distance limitation. If you are in a single occupant dwelling (i.e. house) then it is unlikely anyone can get anything. But what if you are in a small poor apartment? Running a password scanner and ripping off people's bank information wouldn't be too difficult.
Also, you can go farther than the rated distances if you play around with antennas. But those get really directional. So if you are going to spy one someone you need relatively clean line of sight and a stable base to put things on. Doing stuff from a car would be difficult.
Ben at August 16, 2019 12:07 PM
"There are lots of more efficient working fluids than water."
Gonna hafta call for more, there. The specific heat capacity of water (1BTU/lbm/°F) beats everything by a good bit; glass is close, but then you have to keep it liquified...
Radwaste at August 16, 2019 12:08 PM

Word to the wise: don't use a bluetooth keyboard. I do computers for work, and I've only had a couple of BT keyboards. They all sucked, but that was 10+ years ago, so maybe they're better now.
As for using antennas to extend your range, your effective range for stealing stuff will be the range of the device you're attacking. So if it is a 10 m device, you generally won't get more than 10 m out of it. Think of the ranges as guaranteed to never exceed because most manufacturers aren't going to give you more than what you "need".
In fact, I would not be surprised if many BT keyboards are tuned for a 3 or so meter distance as most uses won't really need to be further than that. A home theater setup would be an exception, and I'm sure they're others.

Yes! Consider the magnitude of investment depicted in these photographs, grinding away by private investment, 24 hours a day, year after year. You, and they, will presume it's all a savage animal pursuit of profit… But as it happens, the important detail is that every last calculation on that machinery makes Bitcoin arithmetically more secure.
Amazing how hard people will work to play by the rules when incentives are thoughtfully constructed.

"As many as it could work."
It has ever worked? Well, I've seen wilder stuff out there.
"your effective range for stealing stuff will be the range of the device you're attacking." ~IRA
Not true IRA. If you are using off the shelf stuff that is how it works. But if you are willing to make your own antennas you can get quite a bit more out of these things. I have a friend who used his off the shelf cable modem/wifi router and a repurposed satellite TV antenna. He could connect to his apartment wifi from miles away. Both sending and receiving. It used quite a bit more power on the custom antenna side to make that work and was finiky as all getout. Off by a degree or two and he lost the connection so any kind of vibration or motion messed him up. I believe the apartment side was an 802.11n device. So 300ft range max for an indoor device (which is was). Still got it to work over 10,000 feet away.
I hadn't seen the shipping package exploit till a day or two ago. As for the cables that has been around for a while. They also have power supplies that do it too. For both iPhone and Android. I think someone did a cheap battery hack too but don't quote me on that one.
Ben at August 16, 2019 7:18 PM
Dude, you're only going to get *back* what the device you are attacking is able to give you. Unless some how you have given it an boost by giving it an antenna.
In which case it is like likely easier to rip the mass storage device out an image it. Or run away with it. Or ask the owner nicely to give you their passwords.
I R A Darth Aggie at August 16, 2019 9:07 PM
With a highly directional antenna and more sensitive electronics you can pick up that weak signal from much farther away.
But I do agree it is probably much easier to just break in and steal stuff. They guys I know who play with that stuff aren't a threat to anyone. But the facts remain if you know what you are doing you can take that 10m range and stretch it out to 1000m.
