But in truth, child poverty in America has steadily declined for more than 50 years, and in 2018 (the most recent year of data we have), the child poverty rate was at an all-time low. When politicians and pundits suggest otherwise, not only do they mislead the American public, but they also make it harder to further America’s progress against child poverty.
Call it a hunch, but I suspect that at least half of anti-choicers would be happy to ignore any abortions in the first 30 days IF those abortions did not require a doctor's help in any way.
Why do I say that? Because I don't remember hearing anything about attempts to ban abortifacient herbs from being sold in, say, natural health stores. So if there HAVE been such bans, there likely haven't been very many.
Not that those herbs can always be counted on, of course. Also, while tea brewed from certain herbs are generally safe, taking oils internally can be deadly.
And:
...if it's wrong at any stage, why don't we hear more calls for women to go to JAIL, at least, for abortions they had in the first 30 days?
...What if her life isn't at risk - but her health is? Or her job - or marriage? If you (wouldn't try to stop her from getting an abortion in such a case), what makes the cases of strangers any different?

Reading through the thread, lenona:
"But if it's wrong at any stage, why don't we hear more calls for women to go to JAIL, at least, for abortions they had in the first 30 days?"
I'm guessing that if men who believed that would express that opinion, their pool of available women for sex would dry right the heck up.
I personally don't believe in jailing women for abortion, because if all women were jailed for having abortions, this economy would suck. Better to concentrate on the "medical" personnel in cases where it's illegal. But I'm going by the idea that men are interested in sex, and they would know damn well what would happen to their prospects if they advanced an opinion so heretical in modern society.
Anyway, back to the 2018 thread . . .

mpetrie, you know as well as I do that there is no real gender gap when it comes to abortion politics and voters. (Yes, certain pro-choicers need to stop talking as if there were one - but there aren't even that many people who still make hints that way.)
Hint: Last I heard, Concerned Women for America has the same size membership - half a million - as the National Organization for Women. (It used to be a lot larger.)
Bottom line: It would be easy enough to find women - such as those who backed Rick Santorum for president - who BELIEVE that women should go to jail for aborting. Why they don't speak up is another matter. (I'm not saying Santorum would ever have said that out loud - but he's clearly opposed not just to abortion, but to contraception as well, and he said THAT out loud.)
So maybe those women, in their heart of hearts, DON'T think it's really "murder" if it's done before a certain point? Especially if it's their own pregnancy - or a daughter's pregnancy? As in: "The Only Moral Abortion is My Abortion"? (See the 2018 thread.)
Replication considerations.
Where is everybody? Is this a post-MLK thing?

That sounds about right.

If anyone likes, here's a thread we had that deals with abortion:
