More on parenting during the crisis.
http://www.refugees.bratfree.com/read.php?2,435528
It's a short thread that starts with an anecdote from Reddit about a 23-year-old CF person who got asked over the phone to babysit nieces and nephews, and gleefully declined, in part because the screeches and fights in the background were unmistakeable. But, of course, the virus gives everyone these days an extra excuse. (The parents were also clearly jealous of their CF sibling.)
From bell flower: "My 60's and 70's parunts (that's a deliberate misspelling) were not perfect but they would be laughing their asses off at these ineffectual parunts. Really it's more than just parenting--it's being unable to manage your life and get your shit together without outside intervention. It's parunts who have subcontracted life lessons and discipline to schools and teachers, and now thanks to COVID they are stuck at home with their brats and they SUDDENLY realize their kids are intolerable to be around, are rude and are incapable of entertaining themselves.
"I have to admit, I'm loving it. I hope at least some of them are sucking it up, doubling down on their kids and everyone is growing the ---- up, but I realize that probably won't happen."
Randomcfchick: "That reddit post is brilliant. And yeah, that's probably playing out all across the world.
"Parents are miserable mofos because they're stuck with their kids. All the conveniences and luxuries they depended on (kid activities, eating out because they're "busy", recreational shopping, and mooching off/dumping their kids on others) are gone. And maybe...just MAYBE...they're realizing on some level that those things aren't necessities & that they've been doing most of parenting wrong. And that it's just not that great once they have to deal with their own children and their own homes on their own."

Their most personal humbling need not be that deep. In this Harris Podcast, Flanagan suggests that children's school lessons, executed in lockdown through intense online sessions or through parental instruction, require only two (+) hours a day, including readin', writin', and cypherin' your gozintas. We're seeing that the spend-all-day-at-the-schoolhouse scheme was designed to answer other incentives: To give parents a chance to spend all day at work, to socialize (and terrorize) the children, and to benefit teachers, who need the full day of work for nine months a year.
These shelter-in-place edicts aren't a chance for Dad to take Junior out to the North Forty with the tractor to learn how to neatly hoe a row of soybeans, or to the barn to see how to birth a calf, or to the garage to rebuild a truck transmission... And certainly not a chance to take him into town to learn negotiation with the seed dealers and livestock auctioneers.
These families are sharing lockdown in their homes, often modest ones, with nothing but wifi and frozen entrees (if they're lucky) and each other's raw nerves as playthings. We're told that spouse- and child-abuse are probably skyrocketing: Who'd doubt it?
This month is a challenge essentially unprecedented in human history… And it's a challenge all over the planet, all at once.
(You should listen to Flanagan's speculation on which families are likely to benefit the most from this strange circumstance.)

1. All college students in "Social Studies" majors should be required to do the Hunter-gatherer thing during orientation... maybe we can do this the summer before college...
2. Parenting is definitely an expression of underlying values. If getting married was about you and your Bridezilla/trophy wife desires, and never grew into taking joy in giving or at least into some version of "us" larger than self - then that is what your kids will see and imitate. Children learn what they live. And what still-selfish adult will be fulfilled by the giving inherent in parenting? Go whine at each other.
But the conclusion of the bratfree crowd does not take into account the Rest of Us - the (hopefully still) majority who *have* grown up and do take joy in parenting.
I live in an Orthodox Jewish community with large families. We also laugh at the Tel Aviv parents who are freaking out with 1-2 spoiled kids at home. Meanwhile, our kids are playing with each other or with friends (because community is a synergistic value with family) or doing volunteer work (just like their parents who distinquished themselves in the army/community service that is part of Israeli coming of age).
Others are getting off their butts and making money - several of the high-schoolers have started pizza, falafel, and other businesses - either as part of their youth group, or individually. Again - because that's what they've seen their parents (and grandparents) do to build this country, and the settlement we live in.
Those values are why I left the USA to live here. Even after they've traveled to the States and elsewhere, none of my adult children thinks we made the wrong decision.

Ben, I also feel smug at the people freaking out, even though I am a liberal with two kids. I kinda feel that these articles are exaggerated or exceptional, to make us all feel better. Most people I know who don't have only children are doing pretty well.
Our kids are not playing with friends because while it is not forbidden, the government has asked us not to. But they are playing together. They've never gotten along so well! This lock-in is making them closer.
The hunter gatherer camp sounds awesome. I'd do it if I wasn't a vegetarian. If there was a gatherer and learn to make things out of plants camp, I'd LOVE it. 2500 for 3 months?! That's an awesome price, and think what a great experience.

Much of the news is designed to entertain rather than to inform. Which is why I harp on about statistics rather than news stories. Though even statistic can be bent to political ends.

We still haven't reached peak wokeness. If this dude's girlfriend can't figure out what she did that was offensive, my suggestion would be to put the tip of his boot in the crack of her ass and kick her straight to the curb.

Yeah, there would be a certain amount of fun in turning the hoses and setting the dogs on vegans, but come on. No one is actually doing that.

Thoughts on parenting.
Good parents don’t have a hope in hell of turning a sociopathic child into a decent adult. These people crop up with rare regularity in all families.
Even the most chaotic upbringing doesn’t ruin a decent loving human being. You can serve as a good example or a horrible warning
One of the most rebellious teens I ever saw, the product of a genius college professor father and a mentally ill borderline mother got her shit together at 19, went to the AFA, graduated with honors and became an outstanding pilot.
I was not a strict parent, but we usually all had diner together. Both my kids, now in their thirties are fine loving decent people who are employed, responsible, kind to animals, other people, and their parents.
Parents get too much of the blame, and the credit. I was more lucky than good.

Non-religious vegans tend to think of themselves as an oppressed lot fighting for justice (for animals).
I used to work with an Indian-American who was vegan. He was the only vegan who managed not to annoy me somehow. He didn't preach veganism or make comments when others consumed animal products. He simply followed his religion's dictates and let others follow theirs. We used to save the dark chocolate candies in the dish for him since they were non-dairy.

The top comment so far, at Slate, is:
"Agree 100% that the girlfriend owes mom an apology. But, the repeated accusations of DMO that she was comparing black people to animals didn’t strike true to me. She was comparing the seriousness/gravity of the two struggles. That is offensive enough without the speculated implication.
"That aside, the girlfriend is remarkably tone deaf. I’d reevaluate that relationship if I were LW. Not because she is racist, but because she is tone deaf and rude."
Others pointed out that in all likelihood, the GF meant that ALL humans are on the same level as animals - but didn't bother to think before speaking. (That didn't occur to Prudie - they criticized Prudie for jumping to conclusions.)
IMO, the main rules that got forgotten were:
1. Never make personal remarks. It's not that hard to figure out what "personal" means.
2. Never assume that the message you send will be the message received.
3. Unless the PURPOSE of the gathering is to debate a sensitive subject (sex, religion, politics, & money, just for starters) you are Not Allowed To Talk About It. Why does this make young people so mad? Again, it shouldn't be hard to figure out what's likely to be a sensitive subject. Btw, the GF would STILL have been outrageously rude had she "merely" reprimanded the parents for having a different diet. Diet is a sensitive subject as well.

Just putting this out there: A name new to me — and forever to be memory-locked with the global howl of terror that was March 2020 — is young (25) comedienne Taylor Tomlinson. I can't watch more than a few seconds of her standup to determine whether or not she's funny. It wounds the heart so dearly when her jokes don't strike squarely, earning guffaws from the adoring crowd…
…Because that's got to be the prettiest face on the planet.
(Disregard all PR photography; sincere snaps of her smile will shine a glow from your ticker.)
Her boyfriend has a savvy grin and a really strong hour which you can watch for free.
(And she has a grown woman's voice, not a cloying starlet squeak! What's not to love?)

At no time during perhaps a full minute of contemplation did the 38th Presidency appear in my consciousness.
We were all pretty deeply aware of it at the time.
Years later I heard that it was Jer who was the big drinker, hence the oft-video'd tumbles which sparked the Chase/SNL skits. I don't know, but much would be explained. He was otherwise the most athletic president since, I dunno, Teddy?
Anyway, the 'theory' goes that Betty went public (and eventually got into the clinic business) to encourage him in the firmest manner possible to get his shit together… As if to take the bullet of public opinion. (I always liked that woman.)
