Modern Self-Flagellation Leaves No Ugly, Oozing Flesh Wounds
There's a creepy form of "sin" confession and self-denunciation going on lately, which people use to rack up virtual "woke" points...woke cred.
Increasingly, there are people popping up who publicly give up jobs and explain it via a sort of "white shame."
For example, from Twitter:
'Black characters should be played by Black actors': Jenny Slate exits Big MouthBig Mouth creators vowed to find a Black actor to voice Missy, a young biracial girl, after Jenny Slate, who is a white actor, announced her decision to leave the Netflix cartoon series. "Ending my portrayal of Missy is one step in a life-long process of uncovering the racism in my actions," Slate said. The show creators issued an apology and say they "regret" their "original decision to cast a white actor to voice a biracial character."
Here's another thing that's popping up here and there: demands that people give money on the basis of their skin color and others'. Judge people "by the content of their character"? No, now we've got neo-racism, proudly waving its flag (and its cash apps).
White people,

At this point you should have your Black friends' cashapps, PayPals, etc memorized. Write them on Post-Its & put them on your wall, refrigerators, mirrors. Include them in the chat boxes for family zoom calls. Have your children recite them back to you.
My friends and colleagues who are black are accomplished, very successful people. Every one would be deeply offended (and I'm pretty sure find it insultingly racist) if I sent them money because they're black and I'm white. PS Come to think of it, all have more money than I do!
I'm beginning to think these attitudes (and others in similar camps) could end up shifting public sentiment, creating resentment in white people who are not racist, who've taken the MLK approach throughout their lives. Will those people vote for Trump. Perhaps not. Or...perhaps.
What do you think?
Last weekend I was contacted by a relative who is black. Evidently, he is the product of breeding by a slave master who is related to me.
I started thinking about what I owed him in the way of reparation.
Perhaps this is the easy way out, but I do think that he is owed something by society as a whole, but not me personally. Jim Crow laws and unequal educational opportunities in traditionally black areas have likely hurt him as have cultural aspects that may be legacies of the physical and psychological torture of slavery.
I thought about how I personally have benefitted from my ancestry. My parents didn’t pay for college but they did pay for braces and medical care, so perhaps I owe medical and dental care to black children. I did benefit from good schools, so perhaps I owe preschool to black children so that they are ready to fully participate in good school opportunities.
I did inherit from one grandparent. My father used it to take us all to dinner and then it was gone, so I may owe him a nice dinner.
When I look at the way I vote, it is consistent with my values. I don’t believe that you can fully take advantage of the opportunities available in the US without medical and dental care, so I vote for universal healthcare. As we are finding in this pandemic, if not everyone is protected, it hurts us. Also, head start has shown to improve quality of life and reduce incarceration so much, that it pays about $4 for every $1 spent.
I supposed it is not the same as depositing directly to PayPal. Shrug.

Just out of curiosity, how do you propose we pay for the universal health care of 300 million people?
As for reparations, didn't we already pay the bill on past offenses?
- 600,000 dead in the Civil War
- Reconstruction
- 1964 Civil Rights Bill
- Affirmative Action
How many more bills for this are we going to be presented? As someone with ancestors who fought on both sides, what do I owe? As someone with no ancestors on either side, what do I owe? Does the recent immigrant owe anything?
Are there no black children with braces?
That you benefited from your parents' hard work is not racial. Denzel Washington's children will benefit from his hard work. As will the children of Will Smith, Quincy Jones, Dionne Warwick, Kanye West, Ben Carson, Robert Johnson, Michael Jordan, etc.
What you owe your long-lost relative is a family connection, an acknowledgement of kinship; perhaps an invite to the next family reunion.
If you do want to give this person money, at least check the DNA results. Don't let someone pick your pocket with an unsubstantiated claim to kinship.

If the character is biracial, why can't an actor of one of those races voice her?
If Denzel Washington can play Hamlet and Laurence Olivier can play Othello -- both to widespread acclaim -- why can't Jenny Slate voice Missy?
Conan the Grammarian at June 25, 2020 6:42 AM
hmmm, what would this person think if someone said historically white characters should be played by someone white? Or male characters should be played by males?
It makes me think of all the women who have done voice overs for young boys in cartoons - Nancy Cartwright comes to mind. Should she NOT be allowed to do Bart Simpson?
Or let's go one further - animals in cartoons should be voiced over by their own species! No more talent like Mel Blanc - the man with a thousand voices - doing characters like Bug Bunny, Daffy Duck or Porky Pig. No, we need a real rabbit, a real duck, and a real pig to do those voices!
As far as the "give to black people because your white" crap goes - yes, this, along with all the rioting, er, I mean "peaceful protesting" will cause more people to vote for Trump. Or, in the very least, it will cause a lot of Democrat voters to stay away from the polls in November.
The company I work for has jumped on the BLM bandwagon. Our company's intranet has internal news and for the last several weeks there has been a new article every day about what we can do as individuals to stop "systemic racism." One of the articles focused on "what white people need to do." Holy crap! I think they don't realize how that came across - targeting people in the workplace because of their protected class status!? That sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
One last thing - since it is leading there anyway - is the issue of reparations. I, as a white guy, do NOT owe anything to blacks. Instead, every black person in America owes ME! My ancestors lost the family farm because they had to go off to fight in the US civil war to free black Americans' ancestors. Since my ancestors lost the farm while freeing black slaves I wasn't able to inherit that farm! So, every black American owes ME! Pay up!

creating resentment in white people who are not racist
One can call a person a racist for only so long before they change their tune to "Yeah, I'm a racist. Get bent." If you're very, very lucky that's as far as it goes. As we've seen, once you've been tagged as a racist, there is no forgiveness.
Give no quarter. For no quarter will be given.

Thank god, Jenny Slate. I was so worried for Jenny Slate. Now I know that Jenny Slate is doing the right thing. Will Jenny Slate get some pushback for this? Is it dangerous for Jenny Slate to take such a principled stance? Yes, but Jenny Slate's bravery is newsworthy, and brave, and not self-serving in the least.
Jenny Slate isn't just thinking about Jenny Slate, or what's good for Jenny Slate, or Jenny Slate's career. Jenny Slate is sacrificing for the good of others, not just Jenny Slate.
So let's all thank Jenny Slate for being Jenny Slate, the best Jenny Slate that Jenny Slate can be.
That's spelled J-e-n-n-y S-l-a-t-e.

I predict that those supposedly benefited by these gestures will have no gratitude, and will only demand more and/or shame their "benefactors" even more for falling for the snow job. Because racism accusers can never be satisfied. That would allow their targets to go back to enjoying life.
As for the merits, I'm with charles.
Everything the "woke" are doing is exactly how you create hate, that will take a long time to go away.
Congratulations, Al Sharpton, this is your legacy. Your followers are becoming the most hated people on earth, but you're getting paid so it's worth it, right?

Some of the commentary surrounding recent riots has me concerned: we may not be addressing people correctly.
If you are the type to bend over backwards to identify someone as a member of a class, rather than recognize them as an individual, you may not be PROPERLY labeling them for your convenience. After all, if you don’t say the RIGHT politically-correct thing, how will you show others you care so hard about appearances as you perpetuate class warfare and demonstrate your desperate need to submit to others?
Look here. It isn’t enough to say, “African-American”. Think about Idris Elba, and how embarrassed you’d be if you didn’t know he was from Britain, and thus, “Afro-British”. You want to do this right, right?
So - more so than when trying to credit a non-cisnormative person with the correct personal pronoun - you must find out how the person clearly worth more than yourself identifies with respect to country of origin. This could be a daunting task, so be patient and keep that mind open. Here are some, not all, choices:
Afro-British
Afro-Canadian
Afro-Welsh
Afro-Irish
Afro-Scottish
Afro-German
Afro-Italian
Afro-Columbian
Afro-Mexican
Afro-Jamaican
Afro-Salvadoran
Afro-French
Afro-Scandavian
…you get the idea.
Now, you might notice that there are many nations ACTUALLY IN AFRICA a native may prefer to be identified with.
Don’t let that slow your roll. You know better than anyone how you have victimized them, too, merely for breathing as your ancestors built every modern convenience, so do this work and use the RIGHT HONORIFIC!
This will solve EVERYTHING. You know it will!
Only the culture *capable* of delivering prosperity can be *blamed* for not *giving* it to others. First.
And just what culture is DEMANDING things from others?

If you are talking about reparations for Jim Crow laws and the like, the solution is simple. The Democrat party is the party that was for them, and enacted them, so the Democratic party should be the only one to pay reparations.
