WSJ's Fashion Recommendations For Women Who Do Not Actually Exist
In the WSJ, Alexa Brazilian is the author of one of those ill-advised fashion pieces that comes out every few years advising women to wear those ugly-as-fuck suits that have shorts instead of pants as the bottom. Seriously.
The headline:
"Shelve your skirt and pant suits. The summer's most versatile combo is cropped and goes from office to party without a hitch"...
My comment at the WSJ:
Uh, the second part of the headline is missing. "...if you are 12 and borderline anorexic."Please don't advise women to wear shorts to the office. Save for the truly lithe ones, your recommendation is a crime against female humanity.
And frankly, against the eyeballs of the rest of us.

Bwah ha ha ha ha!
They look so silly!
I think I'll start a fashion trend of a ballgown skirt with a swimsuit top.

Ever get the feeling that women in fashion are trying to sabotage women in business?
Robert at June 11, 2011 2:15 AM
Some of those shorts are well above the knee. If they were skirts, they would be unacceptable to wear in an office. They look nice on those models but I remember my grandma sporting shorts and I need to repress a few more memories now.
Kendra at June 11, 2011 2:24 AM
Haha! Back in the 80s those were called skorts. They're no less ugly today as they were back then. Long sleeves plus shorts almost never looks good in any setting, mainly because one's for keeping you warm and the other is for keeping you cool.
Those prices are the real crime against humanity. $2,210 for a crappy jacket and shorts? I usually pay $10-$40 for an outfit I actually like. $150 for *fake* pearls? And holy crap, $20,700 for costume jewelry earrings? Where are these people working that they are willing to blow $3,000-$30,000 on a single outfit? Even high-end tuxedos don't cost a tenth that much.
Also, lol at pairing bright blue plastic sandals with a pink and red "suit" and orange and green handbag. And a bright red purse with a dark blue outfit. If you're going to insanely overcharge for an outfit, it should at least sort of match. Or at least not clash.
Sarah at June 11, 2011 2:35 AM
My favorite bit is how the middle girl in the main photo is wearing her "I'm serious" glasses with her hair parted in a straight line. Obviously an attempt to make the outfit look like an "office" outfit.
And who wears shorts or short skirts out in the evening? Unless you're planning on spending the evening a la Jersey Shore or any other reality show, and clubbing? Grown up people (I can't say adults, technically the reality shows feature over 18 yr olds) don't generally do that.
Jazzhands at June 11, 2011 6:54 AM
I'm looking forward to wearing an Armani single breasted suit with the trousers cut off above the knee in southern hemisphere summer.
Hey, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, right?
Ltw at June 11, 2011 6:55 AM
What the? My office isn't all *that* conservative, but our dress code explicitly says no shorts, and capris must be well below the knee.
And if the point is supposed to be something about how you can wear them to work and an evening out, why are there separate outfits (not tops, not accessories, but whole. different. outfits.) for offices versus evening versus weekend?
jen at June 11, 2011 8:05 AM
"Some of those shorts are well above the knee. If they were skirts, they would be unacceptable to wear in an office."
I was just thinking this. In any business where a suit is standard attire, these outfits would be utterly inappropriate.
Actually, I can't think of anyplace they ought to be worn. The jacket is too dressy, the shorts too informal - they don't fit anywhere. Typically designer-stupidity.
a_random_guy at June 11, 2011 8:56 AM
I don't know, guys, I would totally wear any of these little suits. I'm also 26, a long-distance runner, and am pretty much my own supervisor at work. Like the other Sarah, though, I'm horrified by the prices of these suits...and find it quite amusing that they paired them all with cheap little Gap tanks, like they're making the whole outfit a bargain for everybody! Sigh. Maybe I should learn to sew.

And shorts are to be worn with caution by any but the most feminine and slim women. I'm quite slim but I have an hourglass figure, and I (and probably most women) look better in a short skirt. I wear long skirts out, but I have a short J. Crew black terrycloth mini I wear at home when it's hot. That or a sarong.
Sarah, you might have the body for it, but I'd bet you look better in a short skirt than shorts. Better to men, that is. If you're not interested in heterosexual men, well, then, short-suits it is, perhaps. Although my good friend who's a lesbian would probably think these are horrifying.

The short suits scream: "I'm not as serious as you think," which strikes me as suboptimal for business wear; I'm the last guy on earth to object to extensive leg exposure, but I can't help thinking that this particular style is ultimately counterproductive for the wearer.

If any woman wears an outfit like this, she loses all right to protest sexual harassment. If you dress like a sleaze, don't be surprised to be treated as such.

And do you go around grabbing the asses of women in short skirts who you see in the market or calling "Hey, slutty!"? And on a legal note, are you a legal scholar or just some guy pontificating based on nothing on a Saturday?
An excellent book on sexual harassment in the workplace is Dr. Kingsley Browne's Biology at Work: Rethinking Sexual Equality.

My thoughts exactly. Sexy? Sleazy? Noooo. Unattractive? Maybe. And even if a woman has on a sexy outfit does not mean she doesn't get to protest harassment.
As for the outfits, I can see some of my friends who work in fashion or for certain magazines in certain cities totally wearing this to the office.
It wouldn't fly in my work environment -- or on certain bodies.
...Also, I'll take the shorts on the far left just to wear out. And I'll take that jacket in the middle to wear for work.
sofar at June 11, 2011 12:42 PM
I might not be the best judge of this, but those women look malnourished.
Patrick at June 11, 2011 1:38 PM
I would never, ever wear shorts to the office. I wear shorts after work and on weekends because they're funchtional and good for toddler wrangling, but a shorts-suit is ridiculous. Only fashion people and strippers (outside of work) wear that kind of thing. My standard outfit for the office during the summer is a sleeveless dress with a super-light cardigan or blazer, and heeled sandals.

The advice is for hot New York City office girls looking for a rich man.
It's not meant for bloggers and ladies that post comments on blogs.
Bay at June 11, 2011 7:27 PM
Speaking only for the legal profession, I can say with confidence that any one of these outfits is a good way to not be taken seriously.

sorry Bay... Gentlemen prefer skirts, in such situations. Because that is a type of clothing that men don't wear, and? It palys up the hips. Hips that the male brain is hardwired to look for.
OTOH If you dress like a wannabe who is going to take you seriously?
Shorts are for a casual weekend something...
SwissArmyD at June 13, 2011 11:00 AM
NO. BAD.
Ditto for formal shorts at night, or anything that combines two or more of the following: shorts, stockings, and high heels.
I can't even stand those capri-length dress pants that rear their ugly, foreshortened little heads every springtime.
