Bloomberg Thinks He's Your Mommy
In the latest Meddle Bloomberg police action, he's banning big sugary drinks. Michael M. Grynbaum writes in The New York Times:
New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity. The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces -- about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle -- would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.
The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.
"Obesity is a nationwide problem, and all over the United States, public health officials are wringing their hands saying, 'Oh, this is terrible,' " Mr. Bloomberg said in an interview on Wednesday in the Governor's Room at City Hall.
"New York City is not about wringing your hands; it's about doing something," he said. "I think that's what the public wants the mayor to do."
I think the mayor has an inflated idea of the office he was elected to. It's "Mr. Mayor," not "Mr. Mommy."
In interviews at the AMC Loews Village, in the East Village in Manhattan, some filmgoers said restricting large soda sales made sense to them.
This is called being an adult and making personal choices.
Will the mayor also be setting the city's bedtime?

Okay, soda is full of sugar that causes obesity and death. I'll give him that. But what about fruit juice? Juice is chock full of sugar, too.
It's my money. Why can't I buy a vat of Mountain Dew if I want?
Also, I don't see people buying less soda. They'll just have to purchase more cups and bottles to get they amount they're used to drinking. Won't that mean more garbage? Won't someone think of the planet???

Why not ban automobiles as well?
Riding around in cars instead of walking isn't 'good for you' either.

While being eager to establish rules to micromanage the behavior of others, Bloomberg isn't very respectful of existing rules as they apply to HIM.
It was recently reported that he's been repeatedly landing his helicopter at the East 34th St Heliport on weekends, despite the fact that this heliport is CLOSED on Saturday and Sunday (for noise reasons), as clearly specified in the FAA Airport/Facility Guide.

You know, if all the movie theaters, sports arenas, and restaurants decided not to comply, the ban would be completely unenforceable. That would make the Bloomberg administration look silly and ineffectual. Of course, the collateral damage from such an action is hard to predict.

I agree with Old RMP Daddy. But...
Still New York is scary as with many union and government cities. Is that true the majority of places will go on as normal, but the law will still be put in effect and enforced. How and On who is the question? Big business? Small Business/Mom Pop places? Political opponents? Rich? Poor? With New York not every one will get screwed but somebody sure as hell is.
Still WTF! Is there not more important things to worry about. Litter, crime, the subway system, economy. Still if you want to reduce obesity easy - good old fashioned shame.
Sorry sir, you can not come to this theater you are too fat and will break the seats.
Wow you are fat, put down the fucking the soda man.
Look mommy! The fat man wheezes going up the elevator!
Enough coddling of people. Society needs to set a standard of what is acceptable and what is not. Most people will follow it to be part of the tribe. But of course no. We can not do that because some precious persons feelings could be hurt and they could develop Bulimia or Anorexia (what ever one it is) or decide to kill themselves. But noooo being fat became a civil right and fatties must be protected.
Wow the list of protect people keeps morphing or adding people to it.
It went some simple skin color, sex, religion. Other got added like sexuality orientation.
But when does such things like looks, weight, drug usage, language, hobby, or extreme sexuality like pedophilia or bestiality preferences have to be allowed and or tolerated where it is not wanted.
No lets not do that. Let's not hurt anybody feelings, but lets just take away their stuff.
Give Me a Break.
A side point for anybody that jumps down my throat. I used to be very fat and am now less fat. You know what I would have loved when I was fat. A person to knock that burger out of my hand and say stop fucking eating that shit.

I have a 32 ounce refillable cup that is usually filled with coffee. Are they going to ban that because it could be filled with soda?
I can't wait for NYC and the surrounding area to secede from NY State and the rest of the union.

Thanks -- you're absolutely right. Bloomberg is a moron. Juice can have more sugar -- diabetes-promoting -- than soda. I would no sooner have juice than I would drink battery acid, unless I were in the desert and dying of thirst.

I can't wait to move out of this city. I love NYC for lots of reasons, but every time I turn around there's some new asinine rule in place (or some old asinine rule I just heard about).
Bloomberg is ignoring the fact that a lot of people will buy a huge soda with the intention of sharing it with other people in their group. That's what I do when I go to the movies. So this ban may actually make some people drink MORE soda if they each have to buy their own smaller-size sodas.
MonicaP at May 31, 2012 7:18 AM
I take it back...not just CA, but NY and IL are becoming, by choice, like E. Germany. IL has governors in jail, NY and CA are regulating everything. I love the natural environment in CA north of S. Barbara, but would never want to live there. Can't stand So. Cal., too many people, too dry.

You know, "fast food", as exemplified by McDonalds, has been around since at least the 50's. And the "nutritional content" of McDonalds' menu hasn't really changed in all that time. It didn't lead to an "obesity epidemic" then. So maybe our self-appointed nannies should look at what's _different_ rather than blaming the vendor for what people buy and eat.
(And I want to drive to work in pirates!)
David L. Burkhead at May 31, 2012 7:39 AM
Oh no, I can't have a large soda. At least I can still mow down a whole NY style pizza all by myself. And refill my 16 ounce cup several times.
What a moron.

OMG we're fat! DO something, Mr. Mayor!

At most fast-food joints, don't they give you an empty cup and you fill it yourself from a machine that has a number of taps - regular soda, diet soda, iced tea, water?
"Here's your 32 oz. cup. Note that it's good for the Diet Coke and iced tea taps ONLY."

"Meanwhile, I'm off to hit Google Images to see if Gracie Mansion has a lawn. If it does, I call upon all good Americans to Do Something — by chugging a Big Gulp of Mountain Dew and lining up to take a long, insolent piss on NYC Nanny Bloomberg's lawn."

1) How stupid.
2) Are New Yorkers really that fat? (We live in Austin but have an apartment in San Antonio for Husband's work... In Austin, you notice the obese people because there aren't as many. In SA, they are so numerous you don't even see them.)
3) Does this annoy New Yorkers enough that they'll vote him out of office, or do they approve of His Nannyness?

The mayor is an idjit. His ban doesn't forbid me from buying 4 16 oz CocaCola's (4x16=64) to go.
Whatta maroon.

Mayor Bloomberg said: "We're not taking away anybody's right to do things. We're simply forcing you to understand that you have to make the conscious decision to go from one cup to another cup."
Meanwhile, Mayor Bloomberg is supporting "National Donut Day" tomorrow morning, June 1st, at Madison Square Park. The event will feature donuts one foot in diameter and a “Proclamation Letter by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.” Entenmann's (the donut makers) will be rewarding lucky winners with 'Free Donuts for a Year'.

A comment heard on the radio tonight:
What about the people who would normally do a single 20 or 24 oz. drink now buying 2 16 oz. drinks to get the same amount?
More than double the cups as waste, probably will drink 28 oz. instead of the original 20 oz.
Fuck Bloomberg and the nanny state.
