Smartphones Go On Vacation But They Don't Always Come Back
Bob Arno on Barcelona pickpockets and the smartphones flying off cafe tables right under the noses of the owners:
The thieves are nonchalant and diabolical, and I'm going to show you how the steal is done. The perps we just filmed practiced a refined version of the pickpocket's postcard trick. For cover, they used just a flimsy sheet of paper with an illegible scrawl on it--and they did it one-handed...

That's if they aren't stolen on the plane by the steward(ess)

What happens when you steal a hackers computer

This one really surprises me. You spend good money for an expensive device. Hundreds of dollars. I mean would you leave $200 dollars right on a table at a bar. Nope, you put in your pocket. Yet many people do not buy the much needed security apps for it.
Another problem is phone have become to big to be put in pockets. Not everyone can have a purse or want to carry a backpack. See people all becoming one handed because of handphones.
At the least people should buy a lojack program. That can track their phone. Also consider getting remote locking and wiping apps too.
I also recommend is labeling your phone. Physically, I mean get one of those engravers and mark your name, etc on the frame. Plus some permanent marker inside in battery or case.
Electronically. Nothing screams your phone like a nice wallpaper with your name!
Of course the best thing is to record all numbers from MAC, ESN, serial, etc.
Check with your provider on what they will sell or do in the event of theft or loss. Many people think the company will care. Problem is many really do care much to at all.
(of course I need to take my own advice. Well slowly getting it done).
Ya Jim P. I loved that video. I think it has been posted at Amy's before.

Damn "Roma." Curse of Europe. Kathy Shaidle has done yeoman's work in exposing this criminal culture in Canada.

Somehow I don't think my third-world Motofone F3 is in danger. (If it's stolen, I'll cheer. It's my employer's property, not mine. Let the thief get the calls at 2 a.m.)

Exactly.
Reminds me of when I was a temp and telling my temp co-workers that if I had a computer, I'd never leave the house and get my needed exercise. A man in his 50s - or older - said "so why don't you get a laptop?"
If I'd been faster, I would have explained that I NEVER take anything valuable out of the house if I can possibly help it - not even a debit card. Since I also try not to shop more than 3 times a week or so (almost always for just a few grocery items), there's little need to carry more than $10 in cash, either. Besides, you only need to use your credit card once a month or so to stop the bank from shutting down your credit line.
Why take chances? It would really, really hurt me to get targeted like that by strangers (thankfully, it's never happened, maybe because they can't see ANY electronic gadgets on me - or even a purse).
