McWhorter On Obama's "Blaccent"
John McWhorter writes at TNR on "The Perpetual Failure to Understand Obama's Double Consciousness":
There's nothing at all surprising in the fact that the President talks, worships, and even thinks in different ways depending on who he's around....Most black Americans have two ways of talking: around black people, what linguists call Black English, and standard English around others. The two bleed into one another to an extent: most black people have a dusting of "blaccent" when speaking standard, and few even in their most unbuttoned moments speak purely Black English. However, the oscillation between the poles is constant.
This is what Obama, as a black American man, does.
I've also noticed Hillary Clinton going hick.
McWhorter is writing in response to Obama's 2007 speech lauding the racist Reverend Wright:
Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
Here's Wright going after the Italians, among others, for "looking down their garlic noses...":

Not a surprise. If you were stuck in Macon, GA, you'd feel the need to fit in right away,
But it's worse than that.

Mitt Romney met with Billy Graham and came away with the endorsement of Billy, aka Jesus Christ's Personal Secretary, which, like, TOTALLY trumps Obama's nutty preacher bidness.
Not until the Graham website took down Gladhandin' Billy's anti-Mormon commentary, of course.

Next week's October Surprise: Billy Graham reaches his blessed hand into the afterlife and secures the Ayn Rand endorsement for Mitt from beyond the grave!

But Barry grew up in Hawaii, not Georgia. How did he develop this accent?

I tend to pick up speech patterns, accents and local idioms fairly quickly.
I havent visited my familly in Tennessee in years, still use 'y'all' and 'crick' fairly often

I have a good friend who is bi-racial. She doesn't sound either black or white, she sounds *Pittsburgh*.
Humans are humans, and they pick up their speech patterns from the people around them as they learn to talk. If someone sounds different each time they speak, they are forcing themselves to sound that way in an effort to pander to their audience.

So the big scandal is that we have a black president that sometimes speaks like a black man? Oh the humanity!
Did the writer go after Northerner Mitt Romney for visiting southern states saying things like: "Hi Y'all. I started my morning off right with some biscuits and gravy!" during the republican primaries? What exactly is the difference? I would link to a vid but I don't want my comment to get kicked into the spam filter.
Yes Obama had a controversial preacher who had some nutty beliefs. But are they any more nutty then believing: that you should wear magic underwear, that you'll get your own planet when you die, or having a grandfather who started a polygamous compound? Again I fail to see a significant difference.

I think you failed to actually read the article!
And you can post one link here -- not 12 -- and the spam filter shouldn't bother with you.
No need to go into hysterics. It's only Sunday.
