Dangerous, Idiotic Drill At Oregon School -- Armed Gunmen Burst In
Richard Cockle writes in The Oregonian:
Two masked men wearing hoodies and wielding handguns burst into the Pine Eagle Charter School in this tiny rural community on Friday. Students were at home for an in-service day, so the gunmen headed into a meeting room full of teachers and opened fire.Someone figured out in a few seconds that the bullets were not drawing blood because they were blanks and the exercise was a drill, designed to test Pine Eagle's preparation for an assault by "active shooters" who were, in reality, members of the school staff. But those few seconds left everybody plenty scared.
Anybody besides me predicting a PTSD lawsuit or two?

Too bad this story didn't end with "two drill participants were shot in the face by a startled teacher."
Do you get the idea that people are entrusting the education of their children to the biggest idiots any of us will ever encounter?

It is almost has if they are teaching those of who do carry concealed to pause and think 'is this a bad guy or a stupid drill?'

"but you're not supposed to concealed carry on campus..."
um, yeah, because nobody would think to use any OTHER kind of weapon...
"2 staff members beaten with baseball bats in a case of mistaken identity..."
"seemed like a good idea, at the time."
famous last words.

Yep.

You know, the rate of homeschooling is on the rise, and many (such as myself) do not "entrust" as much as helicopter-parent the school/teachers/school board/etc (not the kids). It's a hella-lotta work, but there are some upsides (like the size of the library, the gymnastics equipment, the rock wall, track, and massive playground).

From the linked article: "The district's Safety Committee and the School Board now will critically evaluate policies and procedures and decide what to do next, said DeCastro... Armed teachers is one possible outcome, she said. Or the district may get armed and trained volunteers from the community to watch over the school in shifts, she said. Tougher doors and better locks are other options... Gover said the teachers tend to favor having one or two armed teachers in the building at all times... 'We are so remote,' Gover said, 'we are going to have to take care of ourselves.'
After arming a couple of teachers, or deploying armed and trained volunteers, do you think they'd be stupid enough to try another surprise drill like the one reported above? I'd worry that they might be.
A couple of armed teachers or volunteers from the community... I used to think those were reasonable ideas, but a significant number of the people running schools are idiots. Idiots and guns are not a good combination.

It's a sad, sad day in America when the story reads that way instead of :
"Two masked men wearing hoodies and wielding handguns were shot dead by an armed teacher when they burst into the Pine Eagle Charter School in this tiny rural community on Friday.
"Good shooting" said Sheriff Larry 'Lonesome' Pineweasel, "a classic Mozambique drill. The teacher was very calm and dropped both of the bad guys with two shots to the center of mass and then one in the forehead, each. She told me she wanted to make sure the threat was completely neutralized. I'd deputize her but we need her to teach geography."

Read about Orchard Gardens, a troubled school in Roxbury Mass. The pricipal fired security guards and hired an art teacher. That was the beginning of a turn around for the school. We have lots of decisions to make with lots of challenges and limited funds. Personally, I think we can spend our money on better things than security guards and combat training for teachers to prevent mass murders.

Is it bad of me to wish that someone had a CC permit, and had shot and killed the gunmen?
What kind of idiots would create an "exercise" like this?

"Anybody besides me predicting a PTSD lawsuit or two?"
Actually, I wish for more than just a lawsuit - that is so f*cking stupid, and (as you say) dangerous, it deserves jail time for the idiot who thought it up and even more for the jackasses who carried it out!

Evidently education majors are not smart enough to ask themselves "What might go wrong?" The school board should be firing someone, posthaste.
MarkD at May 3, 2013 5:52 AM
No, you're not alone on that thought.

At least they picked a time when no kids were there.
And it did serve as a "wake up call." As with the teacher who thought she had a good plan for such a situation, but realises now that it was worthless.
But it seems people were actually shot: even blanks can wound, in some circumstances kill. The shooters should have at most been shooting the floor or ceiling, not people.

Forget concealed carry. How is it these guys weren't beat half to death with chairs?

Jen: You're right that "mroe guards" is probably a waste of money.
But "spend money on art instead!" doesn't work.
That school turned around the same every one-off "this school magically got better!" case happens: a charismatic and motivated actor (in this case a principal; sometimes it's a teacher) jump-started the process and got it going, and then it was self-sufficient.
(Of course, when he leaves, it's likely to sputter out.)
The big thing there is to make sure we do not buy into the fallacy that "it was spending money on art that did it". It was not. That happened to be the hook the charismatic leader used, but it's not magic.
This is a special case of the Pilot Program Problem.

Public school administrators: it's about the rules, not the schools, you fools.

ss: "Forget concealed carry. How is it these guys weren't beat half to death with chairs?"
Because the "victims" were part of the same group of idiots who perpetrated this drill on them.
