Who Have You Thanked?
It means a lot to people to hear they're appreciated. I had to take a letter out to the mailbox today, and when I woke up at 5 a.m. (I'm on book deadline time), I saw a fire truck go by on my street with lights flashing, so I dashed off a letter to the fire dept. near me thanking them.
It takes very little time to do that and really does mean a lot to people.
My thinking: If you are quick to complain when things are wrong, be quick to offer appreciation when things are right.

Thank you for making such an interesting blog where a lot of interesting folks like to hang out, Amy.

Aw, thank you, Patrick. Means a lot.
And thank you and everybody for making it worth it for me to do, even when I'm really tired and want to go to bed before posting!

I very rarely send a letter of complaint but I do often send letters thanking for a great experience.

I often carry small thank you cards and stamps with me when I travel for work, and send them to thank everyone from folks back home to service providers I encounter when I travel (retail clerks, etc.) It reminds me that I am related, and that I'm connected to something bigger than my self that transcends my physical location. A sanity saver when I am often meeting a whole new group of people at a new place for new work, and repeat. Over time, I've noticed that I complain less and let to of resentment and frustration about bad service, faster - sending thank you notes has noticeably improved the quality of my life.

Glad you agree, Flynne. I was afraid you were going to call me a suck-up.
