Hurl Power
Word now functioning as a powerful emetic for me: "authentic."
Somebody (Mona somebody?) on Twitter -- no longer can find that Tweet -- also mentioned "artisanal."
A bit poking fun at that almost made it into my column this week.
Words on your "most hated" list?

"hurtful"
Ken R at September 12, 2013 2:34 PM
disrespected (used as a verb) hands down most hated. And now that the TV news people are using it, it's apparently a real word. UGH
chickia at September 12, 2013 2:35 PM
inclusiveness
negativity
multicultural
awareness
multitasking
uplifting
momof4 at September 12, 2013 2:46 PM
twerk, twerking
Just say "ass grinding attention whore".
Eric at September 12, 2013 2:54 PM
bipartisan (who believes that ever happens?)
surreal (overused)
rehash (it's redundant)
irregardless (also redundant)
refudiate (thanks, Sarah Palin, you imbecile)
forfend (It sounds wrong, even though it's not. It's like "refudiate" in that it's two words merged to make a non-existent word. Just as refudiate is "refute" and "repudiate" merged, and "irregardless" is "irrespective" and "regardless," forfend sounds like someone mixed up, "God forbid" and "God defend [us]" to make "forfend.")
Eric, since "twerk" is a verb and not a noun, wouldn't the appropriate substitute be "ass-grinding by an attention seeking whore"?
chickia, how true. Words don't need to be used appropriately or correctly in order to find their way into the dictionary. "Irregardless" has made its way there.

I'm still stuck on 'learnings'.
Makes me barf up my eatings.
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at September 12, 2013 3:30 PM
Literally and virtually.
Anything written with hashtags that is not on twitter.
Homophone errors!! Bat shit crazy, here I come.
Seen on my local newspaper- "Rescuers repelled down the slope". Ack! Spellcheck is NOT your friend!
LauraGr at September 12, 2013 3:37 PM
Gog_Magog: I'm still stuck on 'learnings'.
Makes me barf up my eatings.
Hey, Gog, thank you for that. I needed something to laugh at. It's been one hell of a bad day.
Patrick at September 12, 2013 3:50 PM
oi. any word that is used in a way opposite of it's meaning: Diversity, for example. How that magically becomes a word that means "inclusiveness" without explanation... it's now a watchword for accepting the politcally correct POV on what things are allowed, and avoiding anything actually 'diverse'
basically for this question, I look over my glasses and say: "don't get me started."
SwissArmyD at September 12, 2013 3:54 PM
It just grates on me when people use the work snack as a verb. I realize it is accepted dictionary usage but it just sounds so vulgar. I picture these people smacking while they're snacking, with their mouths open.
smurfy at September 12, 2013 3:56 PM
I love the term bat shit crazy, because it has an actual meaning. Like "mad as a hatter".
Eric at September 12, 2013 4:07 PM
understanding - everyone seems to think everyone ELSE needs it
literally - when used to mean "not literally"
any scandal that the media names with the word "gate" after it - I can't wait for things like "hernia-gate" or "confiscate-gate" to show up
inclusive - never is, at least outside of a math text book (but when math folk say "inclusive" they really mean it
Shannon M. Howell at September 12, 2013 4:39 PM
"Amazing" has been my hurl-word for years. I hear it multiple times every day describing the most mundane things or people.
Spell check errors can be fun. My boss once rescheduled a company lunch, concluding the email with "I'm very sorry if this change causes your department any incontinence."
Someone replied to all: "Depends."
bmused at September 12, 2013 5:04 PM
"Liberal" - denotes an authoritarian nowadays, intent on seeing that you do what HE thinks is right.
"Conservative" - engaged in everything EXCEPT conservation, of any asset!
Radwaste at September 12, 2013 6:17 PM
"Incentivize" As Calvin & Hobbs said "verbing weirds language"
AK at September 12, 2013 6:17 PM
Any word used as a prefix for words like justice, equality and truth
lujlp at September 12, 2013 6:22 PM
I agree with learnings and any word prefix used as a prefix for justice (except in).
legend - wait for it - dary
I have just started to hear this one and at some times it is great and perfect but most the time lame
cloboration/ cloborate - to collaborate with the intent of clobber the other's stuff and putting yours in.
The Former Banker at September 12, 2013 7:02 PM
Shannon added the word "literally," which I agree with.
What does that even mean, when you use "literally"? That everything else you've said is "figurative" or "metaphorical"?
Or "honestly." Does that mean everything else you've said was a lie?
Patrick at September 12, 2013 8:40 PM
Top few
"Food insecure"
"Providing a safe space". For verbal expression, not physical safety
"Pop" as a design goal.
"Unconditional love"
"Put our stamp on it" or "make it our own"
"We're pregnant"
Isab at September 12, 2013 9:24 PM
"Trigger warning."
Phryne at September 13, 2013 3:50 AM
"Politically correct"
There's nothing "political" or "correct" about giving whole swaths of the population an excuse to abdicate their personal responsibility.
Flynne at September 13, 2013 5:09 AM
"orientated"
Tim Webster at September 13, 2013 6:57 AM
"Pretentious" -- A word music critics use to describe anything they don't like.
Cousin Dave at September 13, 2013 6:59 AM
"Artifact," when used to describe superfluous corporate documentation that will end up in a file drawer, never to be seen again.
Pirate Jo at September 13, 2013 8:28 AM
Instant classic.
Pricklypear at September 13, 2013 8:38 AM
Everything now is "amazing."
I think some people blame Martha Stewart for this.
lsomber at September 13, 2013 11:16 AM
"empowered"
"cis" or "cisgendered"
Phryne at September 13, 2013 11:28 AM
"That's offensive!" Come on, nobody ever died from being offended.
Phryne at September 13, 2013 11:31 AM
This is from a woman named Abby von Deerlin, whom I don't know; I just saw this on Facebook and saved it.
“I don’t want to curate anything, craft anything, or locally source anything as a career. I don’t want to craft anything curated or locally sourced, or locally source anything curated or crafted, or curate anything crafted, locally sourced, or curated, or sustainably harvest anything curated, crafted, or locally sourced. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.”
Amen.
As for "twerk," the dance's original name was "the pussy pop," which is certainly more descriptive. It got abbreviated to "p-pop." Both that and "twerk" have been around since the 1990s, but have only recently captured mainstream attention.
But my pet peeve? "Awesome." Why would anyone want to sound like a 1980s Valley Girl or stoner?
Kevin at September 13, 2013 11:58 AM
"have a conversation"
in life, when you hear these words, it generally means, "we are going to talk about something you are doing wrong, and I am going to talk at you about it until you feel bad enough to do what I say."
doesn't matter if it's my ex-, my sainted mother, or the idiots in DC, it is actually never an interactive thing, as the initiator has already made up their mind.
**See Also, "FORWARDING the Conversation..."
'neither of those words mean what you think they mean.'
SwissArmyD at September 13, 2013 1:44 PM
Actually, Patrick, bi-partisan is a legitimate term, as in, when something in Congress is bi-partisan, then you know you REALLY have to bend over and grab you ankles.
And no, there won't be any lube, either.
mpetrie98 at September 13, 2013 2:14 PM
I always heard "twerk" was a combination of "work" and "twat"
The Former Banker at September 13, 2013 9:46 PM
"It's all good"
There was a cartoon in the New Yorker a number of months ago making fun of that now-commonplace phrase. A guy says to a woman "It's all good. But some of it is better."
JD at September 14, 2013 11:48 AM
I do not want to hear about the "structure" of wine.
I forbid "granular" to be used about anything but, say, grain.
Not quite in the same category, but I don't really like hearing about "Obamacare" either.
Sue at September 14, 2013 1:34 PM
Tolerance - usually demanded by the most intolerant people you'll ever have the displeasure of knowing.
