Advice Goddess Radio, LIVE Tonite, 7-8pm PT, 10-11pm ET: Nina Teicholz On Why Butter, Meat, And Cheese Are The Foundation Of A Healthy Diet
Amy Alkon's Advice Goddess Radio: "Nerd Your Way To A Better Life!" with the best brains in therapy and research.
Saturated fat is your friend. Really.
It turns out everything we've been told about eating fat is wrong. On tonight's show, meticulous journalist Nina Teichholz will lay out the scientific errors, ego, and dangerous misrepresentations that have underpinned the dietary dogma of the past 60 years.
She'll also lay out the findings of solid science -- why eating more dietary fat will lead us to better health and fitness.
Join us as she discusses all of this and more from her brand new book, "The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat & Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet."
Listen at this link from 7-8 pm Pacific, 10-11 pm Eastern, or download the podcast afterward:

Don't miss last week's show, Science Writer Peg Streep On "Overcoming The Legacy Of A Mean Mother."
I've written that family are people who treat you like family. Sometimes, sadly, one's mother -- the closest familial relation a person can have -- isn't included in that group.
Mother's Day is a tough holiday for some people -- for those whose mothers have died and for those whose mothers were far from the loving, nurturing protectors that others' mothers seem to be.
Science writer Peg Streep, herself the daughter of mean mother, was my guest last Sunday, talking about her book, Mean Mothers: Overcoming the Legacy of Hurt.
She explains why it's been taboo to even let on that you have a cold, unloving mother as well as how such a mother shapes children, and especially daughters, in negative ways.
However, she also shows us the ways out: How she and other daughters of mean mothers have managed to find, believe it or not, the positives in their experience; and how they can go forward, both as more psychologically healthy human beings and as good mothers to their own children.

P.S. Jim P., I posted this early so you wouldn't have to remind me that I'd forgotten later in the day!

I noticed that. Way to go girl! ;-)

I'm going to have to work on my diet some more. She was really interesting to to hear.
Can you post a reminder when her book comes out of pre-order. I've sent my sister an $80 3L bottle of olive oil for the past two Christmases at her request. I want to do cheaper gifts. :-p
Definitely worth listening to for all the myths it breaks.

I just had a small steak with wine for my kid brother's birthday.
I woke up in the middle of the night with GOUT! It felt just like a horse had smashed my foot.
Now I'm scared to eat ANYthing.
I thought gout was supposed to be an obsolete disease, like scurvy. Turns out, it's way more common than you'd imagine.

Jefe, I dealt with a bout of that a couple of weeks ago. I am convinced that the usual nanny-booboo lectures you get when you have gout are worthless. The first time I had it, I'm pretty sure the cause was inhaling dust from drywall sanding (drywall compound is high in calcium). When I started wearing a mask whenever I worked drywall, the gout went away. This time I think it was a combination of an allergic reaction and not drinking enough water. (We took a long driving trip, and well, you don't want to have to stop every 50 miles to go to the bathroom.)

I'm reading everything dr google has, and I want to know what non-drug items I can eat that'll help.

Jefe, there are three things that have helped me with this one (other than Advil, which I have consumed in massive quantities). I can't say which one was most effective since I didn't experiment to that extent.
1. Drink lots and lots of water. I've made it a point to drink some water whenever I go to get a drink of something else, or whenever I pass a water fountain at work.
2. Vitamin C, in moderation. I've been eating some strawberries and mandarin oranges.
3. Bing cherries are supposed to help. Give it a try and see what you think. They are rather expensive right now because they are out of season.
Bicarbonate of soda is supposed to help. Chemistry-wise, that makes sense since it's a pH buffer. But I haven't tried it.
And as mine has gotten better, I've been making it a point to work on the flexibility of the foot, which seems to help break down the inflammation.
The things that seemed to make mine worse, or didn't help:
1. Dairy products. I've read an explanation of this: that ingestion of lactic acid inhibits the kidney's ability to eliminate uric acid. The worst evening I had with mine came after I ate a big serving of macaroni and cheese. High-gravity beers, much to my dismay, have lactic acid in them too.
2. For me, cutting down on meat made no difference.
3. Ice packs made it worse. Much worse.
