Make Up With Me -- Frugally
This is a post for girls and drag queens. Sorry, boys. Except, that is, for the British among you. (Invite a British man to a costume party, and odds are, he will come as a woman. Why is that?)
On to our topic...saving money while still looking fabulous.
My sweet friend Ruth bought me the fabulous, long-lasting MAC Fluidline Gel Eyeliner (about $19) and MAC's terrific eyeliner brush (about $20). I've been wearing this (and using this brush) for a while. If I powder my eyelid after putting it (and the eyeshadow) on, it mostly stays in place, and that's a real accomplishment for eyeliner and eyeshadow and my moist-skinned eyelids.
But $40 altogether is a big chunka change for makeup.
Well, I've found (and tested) a great substitute: Maybelline New York Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner (which comes with an amazing little brush) -- $7.94 in all at the link.
And then, in the eyeshadow department, there's MAKE UP FOR EVER long-lasting cream eyeshadow, which can run you up to about $30. It's fantastic stuff -- stays on and on, but comes off easily with vaseline and/or Cetaphil the next day (as does the eyeliner).
The substitute -- tested by me -- Maybelline Color Tattoo cream eyeshadow, for about $7 to $9 on Amazon, lasted like the expensive version (though was more matte than the taupe MAKE UP FOREVER).

Amy I love this post.
I'm a little pissed off at the moment at all Estee Lauder owned brands (MAC, Bobbi Brown, Smashbox) because they keep raising the prices and lowering the quantity you get!
Also I'm officially boycotting Laura Mercier. That fucking cunt sells makeup-and sometimes glittery one at that-and makes a comment like this:
"It really astonishes me the way American women wear so much makeup," said Laura Mercier, "In America, even teenage girls are overly made-up. And when you are overly made-up, you send out the message that you are overly sexual, that you want to be visible to attract men."
This is from a New York times article where Mercier was quoted:
"Nicole Richie and Britney Spears have that overdone look, the French say. Madonna is forgiven since she is seen as a hard-nosed businesswoman and free spirit. Jennifer Lopez doesn't count because she is Hispanic and therefore culturally more exotic."
We are the number one consumer of your overpriced shit-shut the fuck up.
(BTW I'm really enjoying the direction Koreans are taking makeup. )

That comment from Mercier really is outrageous.

On the Koreans and makeup -- you mean more natural?
I mostly never wear mascara and only wear this eyeshadow and eyeliner -- and then light lipstick. With dark lipstick and done-up eyes, it looks like too much.

Where I purposely go overboard is in wearing formalwear as everydaywear. I get long formalwear skirts for between $10 and $19, typically, on eBay, and then wear them with a little jacket and some scarfy-ness.

I find the Wet n Wild nail polish to be just as long lasting as the fancy stuff.
