If, like me, you are between 52 and 58 years old, you'll probably remember the first time you heard it... And the girls you were obsessed with at the time.
I always resented this passage of a 1988 interview, when he'd already been famous for ten years, and his name had sold me some movie tickets that weren't worth their ink. He was talking about all his deeply personal and terribly meaningfulangst:
It stems, too, from a sense of horror at things that go on in the world. The planet’s climate is changing at such a drastic rate, causing the worst blizzards and droughts in history. Now there is an incredibly large hole in the ozone layer. Like Shakespeare said, this place is such a delicate, fragile firmament. It’s a one-in-a-billion crapshoot. And we’re fucking it up.
And I thought— 'Sumbitch, we're not fucking it up... Maybe you're fucking it up, but I, personally, am part of the solution....'
He'd already had some whispery role in Belushi's death, and had made no secret of a taste for drugs. In recent years we've heard about collapsed second marriages and sobriety lapses.
He had his moments, but his presence might never have been a long-term project.
Sixty-three is more time than's been given to many who are humbler and better-behaved.
Science.
