After work one night we were sitting in the bar in Keller, WA, on the Colville Indian reservation. A guy was telling a story about his cousin; he'd been scolded for letting his 4 year old and his 6 year old go down to play in the creek unsupervised. He said he didn't know what the problem was, they were Ok the year before.

I agree. Too many kids go from zero responsibility up to 16, and then full adult privileges within 24 hours, when they pass some arbitrary birthday.

Responsibility and privileges are best when they are learned, and earned, one step at a time.
